Final Fantasy XII is the first instance in the series in which the character Cid (recurring since Final Fantasy II) is a villain.

The large inclusion of non-human characters was strongly influenced by the development team's interest in history.
There was fan speculation that the game was strongly influenced by the Star Wars franchise. Hideo Minaba said he was a fan of the movies but denied that the films had any influence on the game's design.
The game sold more than 1,764,000 copies in Japan in its first week and roughly 1,500,000 copies in North America in its first week.
The game was promoted at DigitalLife's Gaming Pavilion in New York City on October 11, 2006. This day was dubbed "Final Fantasy XII Gamer's Day" and Square hosted a Final Fantasy XII cosplay contest where entrants had a chance to win a trip to the event.
This game introduced several new features into the franchise including an open world split into zones, a seamless battle system, a controllable camera, a customizable "gambit" system which lets the player control the artificial intelligence of characters in battle; and a "license" system that determines which abilities and equipment are used by characters.
Development first began in December, 2000.
Co-director Yasumi Matsuno had to leave production halfway through development due to health concerns.
Hironobu Sakaguchi did not play the game beyond its introduction as he was disappointed with Yasumi Matsuno's departure.
Akitoshi Kawazu, known for the SaGa series later stepped in as the game's executive producer due to Yasumi Matsuno leaving the project.
The Active Dimension Battle system was designed due to the decision to move away from random encounters. It was decided since the beginning of development that Final Fantasy XII would not contain random encounters.
The gambit system was directly inspired by American Football.
The design of the license system was inspired by the game's political setting, more specifically a "natural extension of the rigid structured society of Archadia, as epitomized by its Judges."
Features that were cut from the game included a two-player mode, and the ability to recruit non-player characters to join in the mob hunts. These features were cut due to memory limitations and that development of these features was causing delays.
The game's Mediterranean-style setting was heavily influenced by Turkey. Other influences included India and New York City.
The game's cutscene battles were influenced by Ancient Rome.
Basch was initially intended to be the main character, but was later changed to Vaan and Penelo when these two characters were created later in development.
It was decided during development that the main character would be more youthful after targeting demographics were considered. This decision was also made as the main character from Vagrant Story was "big and tough" and proved unpopular with gamers.
English translator Alexander O. Smith made the decision to use different dialects of English to reproduce the regional differences in pronunciation found in the Japanese version. He also tried to remove "flat reads" found in other dubbed work by casting voice actors who had experience in theatre work.
The localization team introduced widescreen 16:9 ratio support and reinserted scenes that were left out of the original Japanese version for political reasons and to preserve an "All Ages" rating.
One of the first playable demos of the game was shipped with the American release of Dragon Quest VIII on November 15, 2005.
Following his departure from Square Enix in 2004, Nobuo Uematsu contributed only the ending song with an ironic title, "Kiss Me Goodbye." The song was performed in English and Japanese by Angela Aki.

Star Wars' Biggs and Wedge make another appearance in this entry, although under the guise of Gibbs and Deweg. They are seen guarding the entrance to the Mosphoran Highwaste in Nalbina Fortress.
