Hi there. Welcome to my 9th guide for GameFAQS. It's great to be back.

Why We're Here

I'm assuming that you are here because you are interested in earning all of the Trophies for FFXIIZA. You understand that one of those Trophies is the Scrivener Trophy, which requires you to defeat every enemy in the game, and that some of those enemies can be difficult to find. I'm here to help you find those rare enemies and reach your goal as directly as possible.

It is possible that you are also considering undertaking the Hunt Club sidequest in hopes of earning Rare Monster Trophies to exchange for some high-powered equipment. Although you are welcome to pursue this quest if you so choose, I would like to convince you that it really isn't necessary and that the tangible rewards are negligible to non-existent. Please allow me to explain.

There is no specific Trophy for completing the Hunt Club sidequest or for earning all 31 Rare Monster Trophies. Moreover, the equipment you can earn from this sidequest is extremely limited, and all of it can be obtained much more easily elsewhere in the game. This guide will definitely show you how to gather all of those 31 Trophies if you really want them, but it will also show you considerably easier ways to add Trophy monsters to your Bestiary without necessarily earning the Trophies. (I realize that the mixing of Game Trophies with Rare Monster Trophies can be confusing, but hopefully you can make the distinction.) The bottom line is that I'd like you to at least consider the possibility that pursuing the Hunt Club quest is not a good use of your time.

Advantages of This Guide

While there are other Rare Monster guides available, most of them are primarily lists -- lists of monsters, locations, spawning conditions, etc. Lists are good as general reference sources, but they usually don't translate well to game play. That is, they tell you what needs to be done, but not when it should be done. To the best of my knowledge, this is the first and only Rare Monster guide that provides you with an organized, sequenced plan for finding and defeating all of those rare enemies.

Unlike most Rare Monster guides, this one is step-by-step. It begins with a description of conditions that you should meet before embarking on this quest. Then, using screenshots as well as verbal descriptions, it will show you a sequence of places to go and steps to follow.

If you set out haphazardly (like I did!) to find all of the rare monsters, you will spend way more time than necessary completing this already time-consuming task. By organizing information from a variety of sources, I hope to present you with a guide that minimizes backtracking and repetition and completes your Bestiary as efficiently and frustration-free as possible.

I have also found that other guides contain conflicting or inaccurate information. While I'm not claiming that this guide is error-free, I will say that whenever I encountered a situation where 2 sources disagreed on something, I spent the time necessary to try to resolve such conflicts and present you with my verdict on the matter.

I promise you that everything in this guide works. Although I have gathered information from many different sources, very little (other than percentages) was put into this guide unless I personally verified it. I aim to make sure that you receive accurate information. When I am uncertain about something, I will say so clearly.

Special Note for People Playing the PS2 Version of FFXII

If you are playing the PS2 version of this game, you might be wondering whether or not this guide is for you. In fact, it is.

The PS2 and PS4 versions of the game have many differences, but as far as finding the Rare Game is concerned, the games are essentially identical. In both versions, Rare Game are found in identical places and require identical conditions to appear.

The primary difference is that the PS4 version contains Trial Mode, which can be used to access some Rare Game. Although this guide does allow (and encourage!) readers to use Trial Mode, it also gives main game locations and conditions for all Rare Game including those found in Trial Mode. Therefore, this guide should provide PS2 gamers with everything they need to find all 80 Rare Game. In fact, it is my humble opinion that you would be hard pressed to find a better Rare Game guide, regardless of whether you are using a PS2 or PS4.

What You Won't Find Here

  • This is not a comprehensive guide for acquiring the Scrivener Trophy. Complete lists of enemies and locations for completing filling your Bestiary can be found elsewhere. This guide focuses exclusively on the 80 Rare Monsters.
  • Little if any description will be given of how to defeat the Rare Game. This is because, as the name implies, these enemies aren't so much difficult to defeat as they are difficult to find. In the unlikely instance where special means are necessary to defeat a Rare enemy, I will be sure to give you particulars.
  • I'm not including lists of Loot that can be dropped, Poached, or Stolen unless said Loot is relevant in the late stages of the game.
  • Similarly, I'm not going to give EXP and LP earned from defeating the Monsters since neither will contribute significantly towards your characters' welfare so late in the game.
  • This guide does not lack redundancy. When a Rare Monster can appear in 2 different places (i.e., both in Trial Mode and in the main game,) both will be described. I offer this seemingly unnecessary additional information so that the reader has choices and for the reasons described in the lavender box above. I will, of course, offer my opinion regarding the preferred option.
  • Brevity. As you will come to realize, economy of words is not one of my assets as a writer. Sorry.

Reader Recommendations

I would sincerely appreciate it if you would provide an honest thumbs-up or thumbs-down rating for this guide. If you are already sold on this idea, you can skip the rest of the content in the box. If not, then please allow me to make my case.

I don't know about you, but I grow weary of being asked for my ratings and reviews of products. When I believe that such an assessment is in order, I will give it, but overall I prefer to pay my money, receive my products or services, and be done with it.

Game guides, however, are different. I receive no compensation for what I do, and neither do I ask for any. I really enjoy writing game guides, and by and large, that is reward enough. I believe in contributing high-quality guides in the hopes of giving something back to the gaming community that has done so much to help me throughout the years. By providing a rating, you too can contribute to this community.

A positive recommendation tells me that overall I've achieved my goal, which in turn can lead to more guides of similar caliber. A negative review can be helpful, but only if it includes specifics about what displeased the reader. A courteous note that calls my attention to inaccurate information helps me fix that problem and makes the guide better for future readers.

By the way, it is possible for suggested improvements to accompany positive recommendations. "Overall, I really liked your guide, but I think that you got [this] wrong." Comments can be added to a "Yes or No" rating, or they can be communicated separately through email.

Thank you for your consideration. I hope that this guide exceeds your expectations.

That should give you a pretty good idea of what to expect. If you're still up for this adventure -- and I hope that you are -- then read on.
