Mutant Academy 1.5
For those of you who are fans of the X-Men series, then you most likely have played the first Mutant Academy. It was definately very cool. You could choose ten different characters, each memorable characters from the comics and the movie. There were tons of secrets, putting each mode to good use. There were problems, however. The voices were very 'crunchy', and sounded a bit annoying. Arcade Mode moved slowly, having bad load times. Those same problems arise in the second installation, but it makes up for a great game.
Nothing to gawk at. They're slightly better than the last game. The character models are pretty good, aside from Wolverine's. He just looks a little too chubby. Also, the extra costumes are pretty neat as well, some of them straight from the movie.
The controls are easy to pick up and learn in an instant. Anyone who has played past Capcom games and played as the X-Men in one of their fighters will definately understand the layout. Also, aerial combat is a LOT easier than in other games. Sometimes moves are hard to pull off, but oh well.
The sound isn't any bit great. It's VERY mediocre. The voice bits are crunchy and sound like they've been through a blender. The music is hard to hear, letting the feel of the fighting kind of... Well... Go. However, the voice acting is good if you manage to hear it, and the sound effects are quite nice and clear.
My favorite thing about this game. You can unlock a whole lot of things, just like in the last game. 4 other characters join in the game, being Rogue [with Ms. Marvel's powers!], Forge, Havoc [Cyclop's brother], and Nightcrawler [Who hasn't been seen in an X-game since Children of the Atom]. There are also 4 other secret characters, one of them being Spiderman [!]. With the addition of aerial combat, more moves, and an extra mode [Pool Party], the game is just wonderful.
Yes, the sound does kill the mood sometimes. But still, you have a great sequel... Wait... Lemme rephrase that... You have a great add-on from Mutant Academy 1. The game is remarkably similar to the first, having the exact same stages [with a few additions], same setup, lack of great sound, and generally everything else that the first one had. There are some very welcome additions, though.
Buy or not?:
If you loved the original, then get this. Buy it. It's a great game. If you didn't like the original, rent it and try it out. Still skeptical? Just rent it! Geez.
Rating: 4.5 - Outstanding
