When the game was recalled due to the South Park controversy, it was estimated over 100,000 copies were in retail. Kathy Frazer, a PR official at EA, said of the situation: "Extra PC files are put on the disc as bits of packing material -- data around the edges of PlayStation games so that the laser knows not to read that part while playing the game." She later said, "No one really checks those useless data files. It went through both Sony and Electronic Arts' QA."

The first prints of Tiger Woods '99 for the PlayStation had to be recalled because of an unauthorized file found hidden within the game data on the PlayStation disc. The popular viral video that made South Park popular was found if a user placed the Tiger Wood '99 disc into a computer. For this reason, EA pulled the game and released a patched version shortly after, thus removing the file.
