Game Trivia

  • Outside of Solid Snake's voice actor, David Hayter, nearly all of the voice actors were credited with pseudonyms. This is due to an uncertainty that being credited in a video game would be acceptable with the Screen Actors Guild rules.

Some examples would be Cam Clarke being credited as James Flinders, and Jennifer Hale being credited as Carren Learning.

However, in some early demos of the game David Hayter was credited as Sean Barker, the name of a character he played in the movie Guyver: Dark Hero.

  • Hideo Kojima's original idea for Otacon was of a stereotypical overweight nerd that was always seen eating something. However, this was changed after art director Yoji Shinkawa came up with a design for a skinner version of Otacon that ended up being used in the game. Due to this change Hideo also drastically changed the personality of the character.

  • The term 'Solid' in the games title refers to three characteristics Kojima wanted to market and for players to find in the game. The first being refering to the main character who is named Soild Snake. It was also used to describe the feel of the game being rendered in 3D, unlike the other previous Metal gear games, which were made and presented with 2D graphics. Finally, it was used to describe and rival the another development studio at the time, SquareSoft (now SquareEnix) with the idea that a (solid) cube was better then a square.

    Solid Snake: Yeah, so what?
Naomi Hunter: Didn't you know that cigarettes contain benzopyrene, a chemical that leads to lung cancer? We now know that when benzopyrene enters the body, it changes to benzopyrene diolepoxide (BPDE) and attaches to the receptors on the P53 gene, the gene which causes lung cancer. The BPDE attaches to the P53 gene in three specific locations and causes pre-cancerous changes to the lung tissue.

Connection to Other Media

  • The game has several connections to the earlier Kojima game Policenauts. The first few notes that play when the Konami logo is shown at the start of MGS is lifted from the main theme of that game, a few posters featuring Policenauts are scattered about and most notably - the scene where Otacon references animes isn't taken from an anime; it's from that game.

The character Meryl is also based on a character with the same name and looks in Policenauts, and they even share the same voice actor in Japan.
