The term 'Solid' in the games title refers to three characteristics Kojima wanted to market and for players to find in the game. The first being refering to the main character who is named Soild Snake. It was also used to describe the feel of the game being rendered in 3D, unlike the other previous Metal gear games, which were made and presented with 2D graphics. Finally, it was used to describe and rival the another development studio at the time, SquareSoft (now SquareEnix) with the idea that a (solid) cube was better then a square.
