Game Trivia

  • Originally, Final Fantasy VII's story was to be set in New York City during 1999. It was also to have a "detective story" theme and the main character was to be "Hot Blooded Detective Joe", who would chase the main protagonists and ultimately blow up Midgar.

  • There is a minor glitch in this game regarding the Cover Materia. The rate of Cover can normally go as high as 255% by equipping multiple Cover Materia, however, if you equip too many then the rate will cycle back to 0%

  • To this day, many people still question why and how Cloud's massive Buster Sword is able to remain on his back. The answer lies in his early concept artwork: there is a magnet strapped to Cloud's back and pants straps that holds the sword in place.

  • When you are getting off the train at the No. 1 Reactor, you can examine the fallen soldiers to find Potions. Most people normally just examine each soldier once two find the two Potions, however, if you examine the same soldier twice, you will get two Potions from him, but none from the other.

  • In the Ghost Square part of the Gold Saucer, there is a green pumpkin in the room. If you examine it, it will laugh. The laugh it uses it actually slowed down from the iconic laugh of Kefka, the main antagonist in Final Fantasy VI.

  • Much of the plotline surrounding Aeris's death and the Lifestream was derived from the death of Hironobu Sakaguchi's mother. This led him to create a story that shows that, just because someone has died, they are not truly gone.

  • Ironically, the final boss of this game only has 1 HP. Of course, this is mostly left as such because the final battle is plot-driven more than anything and thus made so that you are certain to kill, regardless of level.

  • The introductory parts of Sephiroth's theme played during the final bosses ("One-Winged Angel") was inspired largely by the song "Purple Haze" by the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

  • Originally, Cloud was not to have his iconic spiky hair but rather slicked-back, black hair: the intentions with this included a contrast to Sephiroth's white hair and to also use slightly less memory. Though it was changed, a similar hairstyle was later used for Angeal in Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII.

  • In the North American version, when you attempt to save to a memory card that is full it will say, "No enough memory left on Memory Card". This was intended to be changed on the PAL version, but clearly left undone and unchecked as, "Please change this to "Memory card full"".

  • The development team was concerned how to effectively implement 3D graphics. To compensate for this, Hironobu Sakaguchi made gameplay a top priority over story, something he had never done since the very first Final Fantasy game.

  • In the Coral Valley, one can see a cave entrance with a vine reaching up to it. This cave can never be accessed in-game; it is surmised that it once held an item that was dummied out of the game.

  • In Final Fantasy VII's Japanese release, Aeris (as she is known in the U.S. release) has the name "earisu", written in katakana. The translation team at Squaresoft translated this as Aeris for the international releases of FFVII. However, in later references to FFVII - such as the Kingdom Hearts series - her name would be translated as Aerith, most likely because the "su" character in katakana often refers to the "th" sound in English.

  • Did you know that Sephiroth uses magic, even when he has no materia? It's coded into his AI to use the magic he has equipped, even if they technically aren't equipped. He also won't use materia you give him, he pretty much does whatever he pleases.

  • Did you know that Sephiroth shares the same character data as Vincent? This means that Sephiroth can use Vincent's guns, and Vincent can use the Masamune. Sephiroth even uses Vincent's stat growth. This is similar to Cait Sith and Young Cloud, they each share character data, but they cannot use each other's weapons.

  • There is a glitch with Magic Defense in this game, which has a parallel to Evade in Final Fantasy VI. For reasons unknown, the Magic Defense contribution of armor is not added to the wielder's Spirit stat, making such contributions immaterial. This was fixed by the 2012 PC rerelease though.

  • Early concept art for Final Fantasy VII showed it as a 2D game, much like its predecessors, although played from an isometric perspective. Early concept art also shows a number of Final Fantasy VI characters in it, indicating that FFVII may have at one point been intended as a true sequel to FFVI, or that these characters were intended to cameo or be used in beta-testing at some point.

  • There is a noticeable difference between the Japanese and international releases of Final Fantasy VII in the Temple of the Ancients: specifically, I refer to the clock room puzzle. There, in the international version most are familiar with, you are able to manually move the clock hands to go to a desired room: however, in the original Japanese version the clock is randomly determined, allowing you to choose where to go to only after having fallen thrice.

  • The Spanish translation of Final Fantasy VII is often regarded as one of the worst localizations of all time. Most shockingly among the various errors are references to Aeris, Yuffie, Tifa, and other female characters as men, an error not seen in any other localization or other re-release of the game to date.

  • Did you know that the battle with Safer Sephiroth in the Original Japanese Version is actually quite different from the battle in the U.S.? He no longer opens with Wall, but with Slow. He uses Flare instead of Shadow Flare. Pale Horse is Gravity-Elemental, which means it does not kill. Super Nova is only 20 seconds in length, and does kill now! Lastly, instead of swapping Break for Heartless Angel, he instead swaps Break for Death Sentence.

  • Aeris' death at the end of Disc 1, while one of the most iconic cut-scenes in video game history, actually has a number of continuity mistakes.

    - In the scene prior to the FMV in which Cloud approaches her and is stopped by his team-mates from killing Aeris himself, Aeris is facing the stairs leading to the platform, however in the following FMV after Sephiroth kills her, she has her back to the stairs.

    - As Aeris looks up at Cloud, the platform has a chequered black-and-white pattern on the floor, yet after she is killed by Sephiroth, the floor is now completely white.

    - When the camera zooms in on Sephiroth as he draws his sword up while descending from the ceiling, he's barehanded. Yet when he pulls the sword out of Aeris' body, he's wearing black gloves.

    - As Aeris falls forward, her hair ribbon containing her White Materia falls out. When the death cut-scene ends, it is back in her hair. However, in the next FMV when Cloud places her in the lake, the ribbon is gone again.

    - When Cloud picks Aeris up, he holds her head in his right arm and her legs in his left. Yet in the FMV in which he places her in the lake, Aeris' head in now in Cloud's left arm and her legs in his right.
