  • Normally the only way to obtain the Excalibur II is by playing the game in under 12 hours. However, if the internal clock passes 25,600 hours it will cycle back to 0 hours, allowing you to obtain the Excalibur II without playing for under 12 hours, or obtain it a second time.

  • Final Fantasy IX is notorious for its official strategy guides' quality. Many constantly referred readers -- often multiple times per page, like pop-ups -- to Square's PlayOnline site, rather than just giving the full/necessary info then and there. After the fans' overwhelmingly poor reaction to the online lookup aspects, Square made sure not to repeat the same mistake with Final Fantasy X. (FFIX's guide content was removed from PlayOnline around 2009.)

  • When developed, it was decided Final Fantasy IX would reflect the older Final Fantasy games in a sort of watershedding experience. Several features reflect this: a plot focused on crystals, the appearance of Vivi as the archetypal black mage, and the rural settings in much of the game as compared to the modern/futuristic settings of Final Fantasy VII and VIII.

  • Another reason for Hironobu Sakaguchi to make Final Fantasy IX reflective on the previous entries was because it would be the last of the franchise released for the Sony PlayStation.

  • The game was almost not named Final Fantasy IX. The developers wanted to give the game a different title as the game's setting greatly contrasts from VII and VIII, and were worried that the change of environment would alienate players.

  • Hiroyuki Ito commented on the game's medieval setting: "The development team is attracted to European history and mythology because of its depth and its drama." Much of the game's medieval setting was greatly inspired by Norse and Northern European mythology.

  • Zidane: Ipsen and his good friend Colin worked at a tavern in Treno. One day, Ipsen got a letter. The letter was so wet from rain that most of the writing was illegible. The only part he could read said "Come back home." Nowadays, we have airships and stuff, but back then, it was really hard to travel. He didn't know why he had to go back, but he got some time off, gathered his things, and set out on his journey home. He walked a thousand leagues through the Mist. Sometimes he was attacked by vicious monsters, but he made it, because his friend Colin was by his side. And then, after much time on the road... He had to ask Colin something: "Why did you come with me?"
Garnet: And? What was Colin's answer?
Zidane: "Only because I wanted to go with you."

  • Holy Bell Inscription: "We seek the meaning of life because we are mortal." -- Minu
In this quote, it is also interesting to note that Minu is likely a reference to the character Minu from Final Fantasy II, whose name is often mistranslated as Minwu, Minh, or Ming-Wu. This can be further clarified by the fact that there was a Goddess Bell in the same game.

  • During the course of FFIX, you will have to piece together something called the "Story of Joseph". This story relates much of the plot found in the early half of the Japanese FFII. This includes the prelude to the fight against the Paramekian Empire, and focuses on Joseph's (then Josef in other releases of FFII) aid of your FFII party as you go through the Snow Cave to obtain the Goddess Bell, which ultimately culminates in Joseph's death.
