This walkthrough only covers the 1991 shareware version of The Last Half of Darkness VGA. This walkthrough does not cover the 1990 versions of The Last Half of Darkness. They are commonly known as The Last Half of Darkness EGA and The Last Half of Darkness EGA+ [Although the title screen says "The Last Half of Darkness VGA", it is not actually displayed in true VGA graphics.] Or the 2000 version of The Last Half of Darkness: The New Beginning. There are unmarked spoilers in this document. I written this in a way to tell the player how to beat this game and I may skip areas that serve no purpose in getting toward the end. To experience the most fulfillment is to explore areas on your own and use this as a guide to help keep you on the right track. I hope you enjoy playing this game as much as I did! O============================================================================O | [02] CONTROLS | O============================================================================O o------------------------------------------------------------------o | USING THE KEYBOARD | o------------------------------------------------------------------o If a mouse is not available the keyboard must be used. Use the arrow keys to position the cursor over objects, doors, etc. or to select commands. Pressing the NUM LOCK key will allow the cursor to move in larger increments around the screen. Pressing it again will discontinue this function. Use the space bar to "CLICK." o------------------------------------------------------------------o | COMMANDS | o------------------------------------------------------------------o To select a commmand, simply move the cursor over the command of your choice and "CLICK." For example, if you wanted to enter a room, move the cursor to the command GO and then "CLICK." The command will hi-light to show it has been selected. Then move to the door or inside the exit box (indicating the door) and "CLICK." Examine [F1] - This command will examine an object more closely. Go [F2] - Used to enter through a doorway, exit, etc. Open [F3] - Choose this command when an object or door needs to be opened. Take [F4] - Certain objects are needed to complete your quest. Use this command to put them in your inventory. Operate [F5] - This command will turn certain things on and off. It is also used when you wish to use an object in your inventory. To select an object to operate, simply position the cursor on or near any object inside the inventory box and then "CLICK." Disk [F6] - Save your current game or load a previously saved game. o------------------------------------------------------------------o | SAVING AND LOADING | o------------------------------------------------------------------o To save a game for later use, select the DISK command from the command list. Once selected, a prompt will appear asking you if you want to save, load, or cancel. Enter the SAVE name or enter the LOAD name and press ENTER or RETURN. o------------------------------------------------------------------o | EXITS | o------------------------------------------------------------------o The exit map (located below your inventory) is required to see all possible exits at a given location. The exit map is a top view floorplan of your location. All possible exits are indicated as boxes. The commands GO and OPEN can be used within these boxes. Simply move the cursor INSIDE the box and "CLICK." The result will be the same as if you "CLICKED" on the actual door in the view screen. O============================================================================O | [03] DETAILED WALKTHROUGH | O============================================================================O Uncover your late aunt's secrets... o------------------------------------------------------------------o | ENTRANCE HALL | o------------------------------------------------------------------o We'll go upstairs in just a moment, first let's go into the Kitchen. Select "Go" [F2] and click on the northeastern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | KITCHEN | o------------------------------------------------------------------o Select "Open" [F3] and click on the left cabinets. You will see a KEY hanging from the cabinet door, select "Take" [F4] and click on the KEY. Now select "Open" [F3] and click on the eastern door which leads us outside. Select "Go" [F2] and click on the northeastern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | GARDEN | o------------------------------------------------------------------o There is an empty PAIL on the ground, select "Take" [F4] and click on the PAIL. The fountain here is covered in sludge, so we will have to get our water elsewhere. Select "Go" [F2] and click on the southern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | KITCHEN | o------------------------------------------------------------------o No water comes out of the faucets here, so we will have to check somewhere else. Select "Go" [F2] and click on the southern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | ENTRANCE HALL | o------------------------------------------------------------------o We get a warm welcome from a hooded figure. After he floats away upstairs, we're going to follow him. But we need to take a look at something, select "Examine" [F1] and click on the moosehead to the upper right. It will tell you: "'Plant upstairs is very dry, water soon or it shall die!'" With this clue in mind, select "Go" [F2] and click on the northwestern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | HALLWAY [UPSTAIRS] | o------------------------------------------------------------------o There are four doors here. First, let's unlock the door to our right. Select "Operate" [F5], click on the KEY, and use it on the southeastern door. Then select "Open" [F3] and click on the southeastern door to open it. Now that it is unlocked, select "Go" [F2] and click on the southeastern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | STAIRS | o------------------------------------------------------------------o Ignore the warning, it's safe to go upstairs. Select "Go" [F2] and click on the northern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | ATTIC | o------------------------------------------------------------------o There are two useful items in this attic. First, select "Take" [F4] and click on the TOWEL hanging on the hat rack in front of you. Then select "Open" [F3] and click on the box with a strange symbol of a witch on it. Inside the box is an AXE. Select "Take" [F4] and click on the AXE. We're done here, select "Go" [F2] and click on the southern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | STAIRS | o------------------------------------------------------------------o Select "Go" [F2] and click on the southern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | HALLWAY [UPSTAIRS] | o------------------------------------------------------------------o The next door we should enter is to the southwest. Select "Open" [F3] and click on the southwestern door to open it. Then select "Go" [F2] and click on the southwestern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | BEDROOM [CLOSET ROOM] | o------------------------------------------------------------------o There is a vase on the table which once bloomed a rare Gi-Gi herb that is on the verge of dying. Remembering from what the moosehead told us: "'Plant upstairs is very dry, water soon or it shall die!'" Knowing what we should do next, select "Go" [F2] and click on the northwestern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | BATHROOM | o------------------------------------------------------------------o Let's see if we can get some water here. Select "Operate" [F5] and click on the faucets of the tub. Now that we have running water, "Operate" [F5] the PAIL over the faucet, and we have a FILLED PAIL. Also if you want a quick scare, "Operate" [F5] the faucets on the sink to see a zombie crashing down on you. We are done with the Bathroom, select "Go" [F2] and click on the southern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | BEDROOM [CLOSET ROOM] | o------------------------------------------------------------------o Water the dying plant by selecting "Operate" [F5], then click on the FILLED PAIL, and use it on the vase. The plant quickly sucked up the water and now all we can do is wait for it to bloom. It takes four screens for it to fully blossom, but we have other things to do in the meantime. You can also speed up the blooming process by watering it twice. Well, since we're here, let's get some more water for another objective later on. Select "Go" [F2] and click on the northwestern box on the "Exit Map" to go back to the Bathroom. o------------------------------------------------------------------o | BATHROOM | o------------------------------------------------------------------o Select "Operate" [F5], click on the PAIL, and use it over the tub. Now select "Go" [F2] and click on the southern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | BEDROOM [CLOSET ROOM] | o------------------------------------------------------------------o Select "Go" [F2] and click on the southern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | HALLWAY [UPSTAIRS] | o------------------------------------------------------------------o Now we're gonna go through the door to the northwest. Select "Open" [F3] and click on the northwestern door to open it. Then select "Go" [F2] and click on the northwestern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | HALLWAY [DRESSER ROOM] | o------------------------------------------------------------------o Select "Open" [F3] and click on the dresser. There seems to be a BOX inside, pick it up by selecting "Take" [F4] and click on the BOX. The BOX is locked and there appears to be no way of opening it, even if you used the KEY on it. Oh well. We're done with this room, select "Go" [F2] and click on the southern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | HALLWAY [UPSTAIRS] | o------------------------------------------------------------------o Now let's go through the last door in this hallway. Select "Open" [F3] and click on the northeastern door to open it. Then select "Go" [F2] and click on the northeastern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | BEDROOM [PAINTING ROOM] | o------------------------------------------------------------------o There is a huge painting in this room and upon closer inspection, it appears to be recently wiped. Let's see what happens if we do the same thing, select "Operate" [F5], click on the TOWEL, and use it on the painting. There is a hidden compartment behind this painting and there seems to be something inside! Select "Take" [F4] and BOOK, then open it by selecting "Open" [F3] and BOOK. "Examine" [F1] BOOK to read: "There is some sort of a riddle on one of the pages, Code for girl you must save, try mirror image of the GRAVE." We don't know what this means yet, but we can now leave. Select "Go" [F2] and click on the southern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | HALLWAY [UPSTAIRS] | o------------------------------------------------------------------o Time to check up on the Gi-Gi herb. Select "Go" [F2] and click on the southwestern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | BEDROOM [CLOSET ROOM] | o------------------------------------------------------------------o The Gi-Gi herb is now in full bloom. Let's pluck one off by selecting "Take" [F4] and click on the plant for a GI-GI HERB. We're done with this room, select "Go" [F2] and click on the southern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | HALLWAY [UPSTAIRS] | o------------------------------------------------------------------o We are completely done with upstairs, select "Go" [F2] and click on the southern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | ENTRANCE HALL | o------------------------------------------------------------------o Time to go to an unexplored area. Select "Go" [F2] and click on the southwestern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | HALLWAY [GRANDFATHER CLOCK ROOM] | o------------------------------------------------------------------o Select "Go" [F2] and click on the northwestern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | PARLOR | o------------------------------------------------------------------o There appears to be something on the table. Selecting "Take" [F4] and click on the DROPPER. We'll come back here in just a moment, select "Go" [F2] and click on the southern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | HALLWAY [GRANDFATHER CLOCK ROOM] | o------------------------------------------------------------------o Select "Go" [F2] and click on the northeastern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | STUDY | o------------------------------------------------------------------o There is a creature here, and with the chalkboard next to you stating, "YOUR NOT ALONE" -- aside from the grammatical mistake, they weren't kidding! Thankfully, he's appears to be friendly. First select "Take" [F4] and click on the right bookcase. The creature tells you, "Mix the Gi-Gi with the red, behind the fireplace lay her head. Secret Lab just over there... right behind the case of bare! Open the bare case behind the ghoul and the Secret Lab will be quite full." So there's a secret lab behind the empty bookcase? Select "Open" [F3] and click on the central bookcase behind the creature. The creature will vanish and just as he said, there is a secret doorway. Select "Go" [F2] and click on the northern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | LABORATORY | o------------------------------------------------------------------o Recalling from the BOOK, it states: "Code for girl you must save, try mirror image of the GRAVE." If we were to reverse the word, GRAVE, we will get "EVARG". "Operate" [F5] the computer and it will ask for you to input a password. Input "EVARG", and it will give us this message: "Girl asleep, and maybe dead, drop of green might raise her head. Flood the fire then axe wall must save girl behind it all". Now let's turn our attention to the bubbling red liquid in the skull cauldron. Select "Operate" [F5] and use the DROPPER on the red liquid to get DROPPER FILLED WITH RED LIQUID. Let's go back to the Parlor, select "Go" [F2] and click on the southern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | STUDY | o------------------------------------------------------------------o Select "Go" [F2] and click on the southern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | HALLWAY [GRANDFATHER CLOCK ROOM] | o------------------------------------------------------------------o Select "Go" [F2] and click on the northwestern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | PARLOR | o------------------------------------------------------------------o Recalling from the computer, it states: "Flood the fire then axe wall must save girl behind it all". Since there is a fire here, select "Operate" [F5] and use the FILLED PAIL on the fire. Then select "Operate" [F5] and use the AXE on the boards behind the logs in the fireplace. It reveals a hidden passageway! Select "Go" [F2] and click on the northern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | SLAB | o------------------------------------------------------------------o There is a beautiful girl laying on a slab. Surrounding her body is a pool of lava. Select "Operate" [F5] and use the DROPPER FILLED WITH RED LIQUID on the lava. A mysterious plank will form, allowing you to get closer to her. But we need something to wake her up, let's head back to the Laboratory. Select "Go" [F2] and click on the southern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | PARLOR | o------------------------------------------------------------------o Select "Go" [F2] and click on the southern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | HALLWAY [GRANDFATHER CLOCK ROOM] | o------------------------------------------------------------------o Select "Go" [F2] and click on the northeastern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | STUDY | o------------------------------------------------------------------o Select "Open" [F3] and click on the central bookcase to reveal the secret doorway again. Select "Go" [F2] and click on the northern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | LABORATORY | o------------------------------------------------------------------o Recalling from the computer, it states: "Girl asleep, and maybe dead, drop of green might raise her head." The only thing green in our "Inventory" is the GI-GI HERB. So "Operate" [F5] the GI-GI HERB on the skull cauldron. The liquid's color is now green! Select "Operate" [F5] and use the DROPPER on the green liquid to get DROPPER FILLED WITH GREEN LIQUID. Time to go back to the girl, select "Go" [F2] and click on the southern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | STUDY | o------------------------------------------------------------------o Select "Go" [F2] and click on the southern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | HALLWAY [GRANDFATHER CLOCK ROOM] | o------------------------------------------------------------------o Select "Go" [F2] and click on the northwestern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | PARLOR | o------------------------------------------------------------------o Select "Go" [F2] and click on the northern box on the "Exit Map". o------------------------------------------------------------------o | SLAB | o------------------------------------------------------------------o Remembering the message on the computer stating: "Girl asleep, and maybe dead, drop of green might raise her head." Therefore, to awaken her, select "Operate" [F8] and click on the DROPPER FILLED WITH GREEN LIQUID. It will automatically be used and the girl will wake up. You are given an epilogue of what happens afterward. Congratulations, you've beaten The Last Half of Darkness VGA!
