Welcome to 'Bone: The Great Cow Race' for the PC, a point & click adventure by
Telltale Games released in 2006. This is Part 2 of the Bone series, sequel to
"Out From Boneville".

02.)                    BASICS                                       G0200
===============================================================================

First off, the game is very easy to solve. I highly suggest you try playing
for yourself first. General adventure pointers include talking to everybody,
checking out everything and so on. You cannot die in this game.

Use the Who's Who from the menu to get the backstory of Act 1.


Controls:
`````````

"Bone" is controlled with the mouse. Move around on screen to find different
things to interact with. When there is something, the cursor will change to the
appropriate action, in other words you do not need to select one like in some
other adventure games.

The screen also has a backpack for any inventory the character may carry at
this point.

Press ESC to get back to the main menu, where you can resume, save, load or
quit. Sometimes it is not possible to save, and loading may return you to the
beginning of that scene.


Settings:

Music Volume: Set the music volume.
Voice Volume: Set the voice volume.
Effects Volume: Set the effects volume.
Full Screen: Toggle between full screen and window mode.
Anti-Aliasing: Pick if your graphics card supports it.
Laptop Mode: ?
Tutorial: Extra hint messages during the game, mainly for the cursors.
Subtitles: Subtitles during the game, cutscenes, conversations, etc.

Just Arrived at the Barrelhaven
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Talk to the guys at the table on the right side the room, click on the icon of
the guy on the right (Jon).
*Tell him it's disgusting to chomp on a bone with no meat.
*What's this soup you mentioned?

Take the bone. Use it on the bell near the bar to get attention.
Talk to Smiley about the cow race as much as you want. When you order another
beer, Lucius arrives.

Mopping the Floor with Phoney
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phoney has three swooshes before returning to the bucket of water. He can clean
up two footprints next to each other in one go. However, each time he returns
to the bucket somebody will walk across the area, making more footprints. They
will always leave the same footprints and the guy on the left is east to clean
up after, so concentrate on removing double footprints to reduce the number on
the floor and eventually you will be done.

Gran'ma's Farm

Talking to Gran'ma...
*I have no idea.
*<Pick anything> ex. Phoney doesn't do business with anyone likely to eat him.

Start with packing the cart. Click on it and you will get the empty cart space

Drag and drop the items into it like so:

The crate at the top left, the small packet at the bottom left, the boomerang
shape package at the top right and the long document-laden chest at the bottom
right.

Then go right and talk to Thorn. Use
*I think maybe we should head for town now. It'll be safer.
to move on when you have discussed everything else.

Thorn's Dream
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Simply move the cursor over the four stone carvings in the vicinity. There are
two at the front of the screen, and one each on either side at the back. When
the screen changes, move the cursor over the shadow next to the person, and
then over that person.

The Fair
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Talk to the honey salesman until Thorn gets mad and leaves you alone. The rest
of this part can be played in any order by switching between the Bones.
However, certain events must happen for one Bone to advance the story of
another Bone.

FONE BONE:

Go to the games area and grab some hay from the cart. Return to the bee seller
and use the hay on the fire underneath the large cauldron. Back at the hay
cart, throw the charred hay into it. Take some more hay and feed it to the
cow. Walk right to the next area, climb up the tree and pick up the honey.

Return to the games area and talk to Alvie at the cow race booth.
*You have an interesting accent. Where are you from?
*Oh, I'm not a local.
*I'm from Upper Paua, too!
Play the game by hitting your racer with the catapult. The closer to the
bull's eye the further it will advance. The first time you win a toy chicken.
The second time you win a cow. Playing on another 19 times wins a large cow
but this is optional, but the new guy, Benedict, will also let you play for
free.

Use the hammer to play the game to the right. You'll fail badly.

<AFTER PHONEY HAS TAKEN THE BET FROM JON>

Leave the area and come back, Jon will have told Dirk about the Mystery Cow
bet and make him leave. Select the lever next to the hammer and play the game
once more. You will win, of course.

Go south to meet Thorn. Ted will show up to help you with your poetry.
*You mean like a love poem or something?
*It's hard to put your feelings on paper.
When you see the first attempt of your poem, click on Ted to go look for more
inspiration. Go back to the games area and talk to Dirk.
*I don't suppose you know anything about love poetry, do you?
*I'm trying to think of something smooth. Got any ideas?

Talk to Benedict at the cow race stand.
*I'm working on a poem.

Walk left to the food area, give the toy chicken to the soup salesmen, Cecil,
and talk to him afterwards.
*You wouldn't happen to know anything about poetry, would you?
*Have you got any other ideas for my poem?
*Have you got any more ideas for my poem?
*Bye, Cecil!

Return to the area south of the games and select the paper on the tree stump.
Replace the pictures so that the eyes = dew drop, skin = silk, teeth = milk.
Talk to Ted to continue...


FONEY:

Talk to Jon at the bar.
*So, have you considered who you're betting on?
*Tell me about yourself, Jon.
*Do you have goals, Jon, dreams?
*Why don't you tell me about your goals?
*Noble ambitions! An' you're willing to give them up...
*Ya know, Gran'ma Ben is getting kinda old...
*Sooner or later Grand'ma's gonna be passed up by a faster cow.
*If Gran'ma loses this year, you'll lose your whole bet!
*Ya know, Jon, I gotta line on a REAL fast cow!
*This cow is too fast to even have a name!
*So what'd ya think, Jon...ya still wanna bet on Gran'ma Ben?

Talk to Wendell, the tall guy.
*Have you decided on whom you will be betting this year?
*Don't you care about th' race anymore?
*Uhm, is there a problem here?
*I'm assuming Maude is a cow.
*Gentlemen, let's get our thoughts back on the betting.
*Ok, what's going on here?
*What th' heck are cow shoes?
*Where's your cow, Maude, parked?

Go outside and throw the cow shoe into the barrel next to Lucius. He'll bend
it a little. Walk right and talk to Maude, the cow.
*I don't suppose you know how to do anything interesting...
*<anything>
*Shake.
*Hold that pose.
Place the cow show on Maude.

Go back inside. Take the pepper shaker from the table and use it on the
punching bag outside the window. Now talk to Wendell once more.
*Have you heard about this REAL fast cow?
*This is the FASTEST cow that ever lived!

<AFTER SMILEY MADE GRAN'MA GET A DRINK>

Talk to Gran'ma at the bar.
*I wanted to ask ya somethin' about yet history with th' race.
*I was wonderin'...how long have you been running in this race?
*I was just talkin' to th' guys here an' we were wondering'...
*Couldn't you tell us EXACTLY how many years?
*Are you afraid we'll figure out how old you are?
*Let me ask ya somethin' about this year's race.
*So, Gran'ma, who d'you think is th' fastest cow out there?
*A lot of good lookin' cows, huh? Are you nervous at all?
*So you'd say you race for fun, and not to win?
*You're not gonna try to win th' race this year?
*Actually, I had some more questions 'bout your farm.
*I heard somethin' 'bout some kind of scuffle at your farm.
*It must have taken a lot outta you.
*You sure you feelin' all right? you seem a bit edgy.
*Okay, that's all I wanted to ask for now.

Talk to Euclid.
*Hey, have you heard about this REAL fast cow?
*They call it th' MYSTERY cow!!


SMILEY:

Take the cloth near the door. Use the red pepper to colorize the cloth red.
Throw the coffee pot over to gain a mop. Pick up a potato on the left and place
it on the plate at the window. Ring the bell for Phoney to pick it up and
quickly raise his hat. Collect the key and place the hat back on. Now leave the
kitchen on the right. Talk to Gran'ma Ben when she's arrived.
*You look kinda thirsty.

<AFTER FONE HAS WON THE TOY CHICKEN>

Continue right and open the chicken coop. Grab some eggs from inside and walk
east. Give some eggs to Alvie in exchange for his hat.

<AFTER FONE HAS WON THE HAMMER GAME>

Talk to the possums near the chicken coop.
*I'll play with your guys. What d'ya want me to do?
*Ok, I'll go find a red cape.
Give them the red cape to start playing. When Smiley is tired, hang the cape
on the tree branch and soon you'll have the helmet.

Return to the kitchen and use the mop, helmet and utter to complete the cow
suit.

<AFTER PHONEY HAS COLLECTED ALL THREE BETS>

Outside the kitchen is a the barrel with iron bars. Take one and walk right to
the barn. Inside, Use the iron bar to make noise on the metal objects. There
are two pans hanging down and two pots underneath. His them consecutively to
make the pitchfork slam the bell.

The Great Cow Race
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All you can do is pull a cow's tail and it will raise it's head. When you see
a tree branch with a flag, pull the left cow's tail and it will crash into it.
Next, talk to the left cow, Maude.
*Is that you Maude?
*Shake.
Pull the tail of the black cow and then one of the other's so their head
crashes into the black cow's horns. When you are on the row of cows, move
around by clicking on them and make sure you are on the one that is about to
start dashing off. You can tell if it starts raising it's head. Give Smiley
commands but it won't help. Finally say
*This isn't working.
*Let's play "opposite day"!
and give another command to get past her.

When the rats are chasing you, throw the bone on one of them. Down to two. Use
the pepper shaker on one of the rat's eyes twice to get rid of it. Finally,
throw an egg into the rat's mouth when it's wide open.

Rescue Phoney!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Walk right all the way to the hay cart. Before you can grab some hay the bee
will appear.
*Okay, I'll just be taking this cart now.
Give the honey to the bee and take some hay off the cart. Feed it to the cow.

As Smiley, go right and pick up the mallet near the bread vendor. Use it at
soup stall to break the clock. Collect the cleaver and hack down the wooden
pole near the cauldron.

Big Cow Doll: (Fone)
 Give twenty small cow dolls to Alview. If you have this item you will get a
 small scene at the end of the game.

Book: (Fone)
 Just a book in your inventory. Nothing special and not used in the game.

Hay: (Fone)
 Found in the cart full of it (hay, that is). Stuffed under the cauldron.

Certificate: (Fone)
 Win the 'Burly Barbarian' game. Novelty item and not used in the game.

Chicken Doll: (Fone)
 Win the Great Cow Race. Given to Cecil.

Honey: (Fone)
 Found inside the tree with the bees.

Map: (Fone)
 Not used in the game, available from the start.

Small Cow Doll: (Fone)
 Win at the fair, twenty of these can be traded for a Big Cow Doll.

Smoking Hay: (Fone)
 Obtained from the hay used on the cauldron, which you are supposed to return
 to the hay cart.

Bone: (Phoney)
 The name of the game...oops I mean in the tavern. Rings the bell and thrown
 at the rat creatures after the cow race.

Cow Shoe: (Phoney)
 Obtained from Euclid who has a problem with Wendell (at the tavern). Given to
 Lucius outside of said tavern and used on Maude the Cow.

Dollar: (Phoney)
 Start out with this, pays for beer (or so you thought!)

Egg: (Phoney)
 Obtained after the cow race, thrown at the rat creatures.

Pepper Shaker: (Phoney)
 Found inside the tavern. Used on the punching bag and later on the rat
 creatures.

Dish Rag: (Smiley)
 Found in the kitchen on a hook. Used with the cooking pot.

Eggs: (Smiley)
 Found inside the chicken coop. Given to Alvie in exchange for the udder hat.

Helmet: (Smiley)
  Found after playing with the possums by using the red dish rag on the tree
  branch. It is used on the cow suit in the kitchen to create the horns.

Iron Bar: (Smiley)
 Found outside the tavern after everone is convinced about betting on the
 race.

Key: (Smiley)
 Found under Phoney's hat. Unlocks the chicken coop.

Knife: (Smiley)
 From the soup stand by using the mallet on the lock. Used on the beam near the
 cauldron.

Mallet: (Smiley)
 Lean on the bread stand (not as in "threaten"!) after Phoney has been tied up.
 Used on the soup stand lock to unlock the knife.

Mop: (Smiley)
 Given to you by Lucius after knocking over the coffee pot. Used on the cow
 suit in the kitchen.

Potato: (Smiley)
 On the table in the kitchen. Used on the plate on the counter which will
 reveal the location of the bell.

Sandwich: (Smiley)
 You start out with this but it is not used in the game.

Udder Hat: (Smiley)
 Give the eggs to Alvie in exchange for this. Used on the cow suit in the
 kitchen.

Wooden Spoon: (Smiley)
 Found on the rack in the kitchen. Was supposed to be used for hitting things
 in the barn.
