Not much. There are locations in each side that have NPCs who will only resond to you if you are of the same Faction. However, you don't have to be affiliated with that Faction, you just need to currently have more of that Faction than the other. The main reason for picking on for your guild is to join Alliance Battles. Without being in a guild that has picked on, you can't enter AB. You can enter by getting a guest invite to a guild, but you have to have access from a guild. There is a title associated with both sides, and you can do both titles at once, as long as you get guest invites to donate Faction for the side your guild has not joined.
