Physical defence & armor???

A little bit of info: I have beaten the game before using a pure str build (powerstance 2 great clubs). Now that dark souls 3 was announced I bought the DLCs and decided to start a new character (pyromancer).
So in my previous play through I didn't really care about armor, just wore whatever gave the best AR defence while I'm under 70%. But in this playthrough I focus on all the armor characteristics, no matter how I look (just cause I'm not so tanky anymore). I was wearing full drangleic set with Straid's black hood (for increased casting speed), and then found and put on a full Lion Mage set( as every piece of it increases casting speed). The first one has about 120 defense against slash/strike/thrust while the same numbers for the second one are something like 36. And the weird thing is my total physical defence number only changed by 2!!! I've tried other armor sets I had and it's all the same - PHYS DEF barely changes ( a couple of points) regardless of my armor. So my question is is that number gonna change more after upgrading (reinforcing) it, or heavy armor is completely not worth it???
