Originally Starcraft was going to use the Warcraft 2 engine and many mechanics from Warcraft, however after showing it at E3 1996, many people complained that the games graphics wasn't refreshing and it was just simply being 'Warcraft in space', thus prompted developers Blizzard to create an entirely new engine along with masses of unique features for Starcraft and it's units. One major feature being, that the game to feature three unique races compared to the two races found in Warcraft 2.

In 2000, soon after Starcraft went gold, the sole master copy of its source code was lost. Seventeen years later, a Reddit user randomly encountered it in a box of eBay-bought Blizzard paraphernalia. Many tried persuading him to release the code onto the net, but he eventually gave it back to the company. For the good deed, Blizzard rewarded him with store credit, a copy of Overwatch, and an all-expenses-paid trip to Blizzcon, among other goodies.
Operation CWAL (Can't Wait Any Longer) was a fanfiction project made by users in the battle.net forums while they waited for the oft-delayed Starcraft to release. It got so popular, Blizzard acknowledged it in the game's manual, and added "operation cwal" as a cheat to ramp up unit production rates.
