Act 2 Companion Quests

Valerie: Shelyn's Chosen

This quest will start with a throne room event that occurs approximately 156 days before the deadline in An Ancient Curse, Part 2.

You’ll receive a letter from the Paladin Fredero Sinnet, asking you to release Valerie from your service so that she may return to being a paladin of Shelyn.

If you give the letter to Valerie, she’ll get angry and ask you to help her put an end to the matter. You can suggest ignoring the letter (CN - 54 exp), but Valerie will say that you can’t. You can agree to help her (no moral choice or LE) or you can refuse to help. I always recommend agreeing to help your NPC companions with their quests.

You’ll need to travel to Oleg’s Trading Post to resolve this quest.

If you're in the middle of Bokken's Artisan quest, make sure to bring all 3 parts of the Books: “Of Transmutations and Bodily Poisons” with you when you return to the trading post.

Events & People
  1. Oleg. Oleg sells the Onslaught Cuirass for 500 gold, which is needed for Dragn's quest. This can be easily overlooked in the list, given that the golden circle in the background (denoting a plot/special item) is hidden by the item. Search for it alphabetically by the item’s name.
  2. Bokken. You can give him the books by selecting: “2. About those tasks of yours…”. Bokken carries a copy of Book 2 in his inventory, as he’ll admit with chagrin when you give it to him. Giving him all 3 books earns you 180 exp.
  3. Fredero Sinnet (Paladin 9). Fredero is here with two guards (Fighter 6). Fully buff Valerie before you speak to him. Fredero believes that Valerie is meant to return to Shelyn’s service. You can advance the conversation by selecting: “1. I think you should talk to Valerie alone.” The conversation will either end in a duel between the two (54 exp - no moral choice or CN) or outright combat (CE).
  4. Duel location.
    • On normal difficulty, Fredero has AC 29, 86 hp, Fort +12/Ref +8/Will +9 saves, and makes attacks at a +18 to hit (including -3 from Power Attack) for 1d8+14 damage. He likes to use Sunder Armor to reduce Valerie’s AC and Lay on Hands to heal himself, which can make this a long and challenging battle at 8th level. The easy way to resolve this is by casting Freedom of Movement (4) on Valerie and casting Grease (1) at the duel location in advance. Is it cheap? Absolutely. But it’s also hilarious.

    • If Fredero wins, he’ll leave after saying that Valerie has no right to return to the Order of the Eternal Rose due to her transgressions. Losing the duel fails the Quest: Shelyn’s Chosen.

    • If Valerie prevails, you can end the duel or demand Frederico’s death. You should let them go to get the “best” outcome for Valerie. If you let him go, Frederico will leave with his companions. If you demand his death, Valerie will execute Frederico, and the two fighters will enter combat against your whole party. Regardless of which you choose, you’ll need to speak with Valerie at the capital to complete the Quest: Shelyn’s Chosen (240 exp).

    • Valerie will develop a mysterious scar across her face after the battle—even if Fredero spent the whole battle on the ground and never got a hit in. Personally, I think she was so enthusiastic about giving Fredero a beatdown that she accidentally smacked herself in the face with her sword. After all, Fredero was using a blunt weapon....
