Sulpher E-mail: briansulpher@hotmail.com Version 1.6 Dates Written: June 29th to July 3rd, 2003 I dedicate this to poor old Toad. This is the one game you got to star in, but it was the last NES game that was made so it was ignored because of hype for the SNES. However, I appreciate your greatness! Also, for Cougar, Howler, Koonce, and Gracey. I miss you, and I hope you are living it up in the afterlife as you did in this world. You will always be in my memories, and you will never be forgotten. ----------- Version 1.0 ----------- -Submitted guide on July 3rd, 2003 ----------- Version 1.5 ----------- -Submitted guide on July 16th, 2004 -Altered format to make it look better and flow a little bit better ----------- Version 1.6 ----------- -Submitted guide on 30th of October, 2005 -I added in Retronintendo and Honestgamers as sites allowed to use my FAQs -Altered the format to make it easier on the eyes of the reader ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------Table Of Contents------------------------------ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) Introduction 2) Controls 3) Rules And Enemies 4) Round Game 5) Time Race 6) Strategies 7) Final Word ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------Introduction-------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) The last NES game ever released, it is a great old puzzle game that deserves more attention than it received. So I present to you a FAQ for this great old game! Get rid of the small enemies to stop Wario and his evil ways! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------Controls---------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) This section will look at the controls of the game. D-Pad----> LEFT and RIGHT moves Toad back and forth, and even up walls in his way. UP will also move Toad up a wall as well as allow him to drop the Enemy/Bomb he is holding to appear above it. DOWN will cause the Bombs/Enemies to fall faster as well as allow Toad to kick (along with the A Button). SELECT---> Flips through the various choices in the menu. START----> confirms your selection, pauses/unpauses the game. B Button-> This will pick up a single enemy from the stack as well as dropping one enemy out of a stack being held at a time. This will also cause Toad to kick if he is holding DOWN. A Button-> Picks up an entire stack of enemies and drops them. This will also cause Toad to kick if he is holding DOWN. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------Rules And Enemies----------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) This section will look at how the rules of the game work, and what each enemy's behaviour is. o-------o | Rules | o-------o -Three or more in a row of the same colour, provided that there is at least one Bomb in the line of the same colour, the line will disappear. -Ever Enemy must be cleared, excess Bombs do not effect the level's end. -If you manage to get a line of five on a row or more, a diamond will appear. If you can get at least three in a row of that colour (one being the diamond), that whole set of enemies that colour will disappear. -Once Toad is trapped by a falling Bomb/Enemy, he loses a credit. However, if he is trapped underneath he pile, just press UP to go to the top of that column. -An credits life is obtained through every 30 Coins he collects (a maximum of 9 credits in reserve). -Coins are won after a round by finishing fast enough. Every time that the game switches distributors (from Fairy to Wario to Fairy to Wario to etc.), a loss of Coins (20% of the total amount available at the beginning) will be experienced. You also have a limited time to collect the Coins when they fall, so go grab them quickly before they disappear. -Whenever Wario and Pidgit appear, they will drop Enemies as well as Bombs. -Wario will throw his shoulder into the wall, causing the roof to fall down. Score a diagonal, a double (or more) removal, or a four (or more) in row to cause the roof to reset upwards. -The more takeouts you score off of one Enemy removal, meaning the longer the chain of explosions are as well as multiple explosions will cause Birdo's status bar to be reduced (allowing her and the fairy to stick around a little longer) OR it will cause Wario's status bar to be increased (allowing him and Pidgit to disappear a little quicker). -Game B will play identical to Game A, but Game B will have a Boss Level instead of a regular level at the levels ending in 9. o---------o | Enemies | o---------o ==================== Fuzz & Spud & Squeak ==================== These three enemies are the most commonly faced in the game, with at least one of them being present in at over 90% of the levels. They are the easiest opponents to eliminate, requiring themselves and two more of the same colour (at least one has to be a Bomb) to rid yourself of them (diagonal, horizontal, or vertical). ============== Beaker & Scram ============== These two (an Ape and a dress wearing cat) are fairly rare sightings, and they usually show up with a partner from the trio above. These guys can be a pain to eliminate as they may only be removed with a diagonal line, requiring themselves and two more of the same colour (at least one has to be a Bomb). ==== Dovo ==== These winged-creatures are a little more common than the above Enemies, and they are a little tougher too. They require two blasts to get rid of them, but after the first blast they change to a different colours (Red to White, Blue to Cyan). They are strong, but they still require themselves and two more of the same colour (at least one has to be a Bomb) to rid yourself of them (diagonal, horizontal, or vertical). ===== Spook ===== These jar-like creatures are very similar to the above Enemies in that they require two hits to destroy, but they have the twist of having to be hit twice within a time limit. After the first hit, they will flash for a limited time, at which point they must be blasted again to make them disappear (if they stop flashing, they require two hits again). Killing them requires themselves and two more of the same colour (at least one has to be a Bomb) to rid yourself of them (diagonal, horizontal, or vertical). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------Round Game--------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) This section will look at the Round Game mode, covering each level's enemy type, strategies, and Boss Strategies for Game B. o--------o | Game A | o--------o ======== Round 01 ======== Enemies : Squeak Colours : 1 Coins Available: 5 ======== Round 02 ======== Enemies : Spud Colours : 1 Coins Available: 5 ======== You will have to choose from the following options: o--------------o | Round Number | o--------------o You get to choose from 2 to 5 Rounds on your challenge. o------------o | Difficulty | o------------o Choose between Easy, Normal, and Hard for increased challenge as you move through the list. Good luck on your quest for Gold! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------Strategies---------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) This will outline some strategies to making the game a little easier and your moves more effective. a) Do not wait for the Bombs to come to you to start your movements. This especially holds true for the lower levels or when the stack is lower because the Bombs will take a little bit of time to fall down to your area. Move the Enemies to get the stacks arranged in an order to your liking, allowing for quicker elimination of the Enemies. b) When Wario and Pidgit show up, Start to create some diagonal removals, even if it is all Bombs with no Enemies involved. if this is done correctly, Wario will never get the ceiling to drop more than a space or two at a time (allowing for easier mobility). c) When it comes to Spooks and you get a Bomb that can harm them, hold onto it until another Bomb of the same colour arrives. Use one Bomb and then the other Bomb to destroy the line of Enemies efficiently (no wasting Bombs). d) Use your kick move, especially when holding a Bomb/Enemy overhead. This will not only making transferring an object smoother, but it will also save Toad some time in his travels. e) Try to get Diamonds to appear, ESPECIALLY on the higher levels. If you can get a Diamond to appear early in a big stack level, you can reduce the size of the stack by so much that it will make the level infinitely easier. f) If you have a Bomb that does not match any exposed Enemies, do not be afraid to dig a hole for it to be positioned by an Enemy of the same colour. However, remember to keep an eye on the falling Bombs/Enemies above to be ready to hop back up there to control the quickly falling objects. Also note that this is much easier to do during Birdo's time and NOT Wario's time). g) In the higher levels, do be agressive in your moevements. Go after Bombs, position them where they can be helpful when you clear the colours they rest on (using a diagonal take-out), and also eiliminate whole rows of Bomb colours that will not be of any use to you in thenear future while the stack remains too high for your abilities to work with the extreme height. h) Be creative in your Enemy removals. Always have your eyes open for ANY removal, whether it be vertical, horizontal, or diagonal. If you can incorporate a falling Bomb into the mix, then do so to have less clutter on the screen. i) When going to fight a Boss, you must remember that your main goal is to just survive. If this means you have to continually remove Enemies/Bombs as the area fills, do so continually. You will either make a Diamond (clearing around 20% of the clutter) or the falling Enemies/Bombs will trigger a chain of removals, opening a large space. j) Concentrate on organizing one chain to hurt the Boss. If you try to be fancy, the multitude of falling Enemies/Bombs will usually screw your plans up. Therefore, concentrating on your one Enemy/Bomb chain to get one sure shot in on the Boss at a time. k) If you have a large gap in your stack of Enemies/Bombs, and you get a colour that can be used to remove some of the stack below, you will need to go down the hole while holding the Bomb/Enemy to trigger the chain. This can be used very effectively as well in making diagonals out of the top layers of the clutter through some creative organization. l) If you know Wario is coming soon and all you need is a specific colour of Bomb, do not be afraid to hold DOWN and make the Bombs rain down. This will increase the chances of the Bomb colour you need of showing up, and it will also help Toad to finish before Wario and Pifgit show up to drop more enemies into the field of play (this can really prolong the ROund or even cause the Round to be lost). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------Final Word------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) As is the usual, this walkthrough is copyright property of Brian P. Great game that deserves better coverage than that is has recieved so far. I highly suggest this ignored classic to everyone, especially now that Animal Crossing offers it to the players! Props to my brother for getting me interested in this unbelievably fun puzzle game.
