Game Trivia

  • This game marks the first appearance of Carmilla, a recurring boss in the series. She is named after the main character of Sheridan Le Fanu's Carmilla, a vampire novel published in 1871. Her in-game appearance as a giant mask is a reference as to how the novel's character constantly wore a mask to keep her undead nature a secret.

  • At the time of the game's release, Nintendo were very strict about religious referencing in their NES games - however, one rare example that appears to have been overlooked are the Christian crosses that appear on the churches in the many towns you visit.

  • A lot of the (often pointless) dialogue provided by many of the NPCs in the town areas would lead some gamers to believe that the game was originally mistranslated when it was first released. However, one of the game's original programmers would state that the dialogue was made deliberately misleading in order to give the game more challenge.

  • Dracula's grave reads "1431-76." This is a reference to Vlad Tepes (Vlad the Impaler), a major inspiration for Bram Stoker's original Dracula character. Vlad Tepes was born in 1431 and died in 1476.

  • The villager line "don't look into the Death Star, or you will die!" isn't about Star Wars. It's actually a lore reference about the Shichosei (a faint star by the Big Dipper constellation) from the Fist of the North Star series. Its ill omen is said to shine brighter when two fighers clash, and those who see it are destined to die within a year's time.
