In this game, there is a bit of copy protection, as with most NES games by Konami after 1991, but this is a special instance of it. The game will check that it has the string "IMANOK 1991" in its ROM data and also test a number of opcodes. If any of these fails, the game actually will automatically enable its hard mode without the use of a password, which makes the game much more difficult than normal due to its "one-hit wonder" nature.
