Introduction
Family Trainer: Rai Rai Kyonshis: Baby Kyonshi no Amida Daibouken is a game released in 1989 that is developed by Bandai. This game is based on several movies that were released in Hong Kong throughout the mid 1980's to early 1990's. These movies were called "Kyonshies" in Japan, and are action horror comedies based on vampires. These vampires move around by hopping around, which gives them the nickname "Hopping Vampires". If you want to find out more about Kyonshies, the movies were called Mr. Vampire in the United States. There are other games on the Famicom that are based on Kyonshies as well, like Kyonshies 2 for example.
In this Family Trainer game, you will be playing as the Baby Kyonshi character that is searching for his parents. You will control Baby Kyonshi by using the Family Trainer mat. This is interesting as you are somewhat imitating how the Kyonshies move. You use the Family Trainer mat by hopping on it, and you are controlling a "Hopping Vampire". You can figure out what the developers of the game were trying to do with this game in term of controls.
As you can guess, this game was only released in Japan. The good news is that you do not need any Japanese knowledge to actually play the game. You will miss out on the endings, but I have provided a rough translation of the endings for you.
You can play this game with up to three people with one Family Trainer mat. Everyone who is playing the game will be playing various mini-games until everyone reaches an ending. The game itself is relatively short, and it is also easier when compared to the other Family Trainer games.
The Family Trainer is known by several names outside of Japan. In the United States, it is known as the Power Pad. In Europe, it is known as Family Fun Fitness. This game is released only in Japan, so I will refer to the Japanese name for the floor pad in this guide.
Controls
You will be using the Family Trainer for most of the game. The only time you would be using the actual game controller when you have confirmed the number of players playing the game.
The game controller controls are listed below.
Directional Pad: N/A
Button A: Starts the game after you have selected the number of players.
Button B: Removes the last player that has registered in the game.
Start: Pause
Select: N/A
The next section will briefly explain the Family Trainer. The actual Family Trainer controls differ per game, so it will be explained in the game guide itself.
Family Trainer
The Family Trainer has two sides called side A and side B.

For this game, you will only use side A. When you are playing the game, position your feet on the red squares, as this is going to be your default position for the mini-games. The controls for each game will be explained in the game guide section, as each mini-game will have slightly different controls.
You may notice that side A is really similar to the side B. The main difference is that buttons 1, 4, 9, and 10 are missing from side A. The buttons are also not labeled on side A, but I will still refer to the buttons via the numbers. Here is an example.

As mentioned before, the numbers are not listed on the actual Family Trainer mat on side A. It is labeled here for you convenience. Numbers 1, 4, 9, and 12 does not exist on side A. I will refer the red squares as buttons 6 and 7, which is your default position for the mini-games. You will also use the left green button (Button 5) and the right green button (button 8) when playing this game. You will not use the other green buttons at all in this game, so you can ignore them. This layout is important if you are playing on an emulator, as this is how it is usually formatted when you are setting up your inputs. I will also use these numbers to explain the controls of the mini-games. If I say buttons 6 and 7 for example, I am talking about the red buttons.
You may notice that there is a START button on side A of the Family Trainer. This will act like the START button on the game controller, so you can also pause the game via the Family Trainer. When you are actually playing start the game, you will not need the game controller at all.
Game Start
When you start the game, you will be shown a cut scene of the Kyonshies chasing away a Taoist priest on a bridge. The Baby Kyonshi will fall off the bridge and separated from the other Kyonshies, which happens to be the Baby Kyonshi's parents. The goal of the game is to reunite with his parents.
After the cut scene, you will be on a screen that will show a scroll. The scroll will have three empty spaces on it. This is the character select screen, and the game is asking you how many players are going to play. You can pick any space you want, and each space will put you on a different path to an ending. To select a space, press buttons 5 and 6 for the left space, buttons 6 and 7 for the middle space, and buttons 7 and 8 for the right space. If you do it correctly, you will have a blue Kyonshi on the space that you have selected. The blue Kyonshi is player one. You can add up to two more characters on the other empty spaces. The second player will play as a green Kyonshi, and the third player will play as the red Kyonshi. If you want to remove a player for whatever reason, press the B button on the game controller to remove the last registered player. You will obviously need at least one player registered to play the game. When you are ready to play, press the A button on the game controller to start playing the game.
Game Basics - Amidakuji
You will be put on an "Amidakuji" when you start the game. This literally means ladder climbing, and it is used to create random pairings between two sets of different things. In this case, it will be your characters on one side, and the endings on the other. In between the characters and the endings are different paths consisting of various lines. Depending on what space you have selected for your characters; you will have to follow the lines until you reach the end of the "ladder". If the character comes across an adjacent line, you must cross it. You can find more information about the "Amidakuji" online if you need more information about it. It is also called the "Ghost Leg" or the "Sadalitagi" as well.
Here are some pictures to help better explain how the Amidakuji works.

The first picture shows the path for player 1. The second and third picture shows the paths for players 2 and 3 respectively. The fourth picture shows the Amidakuji without any lines drawn on it. You can see that they will follow the path that they are given while they are moving upwards. If there is an adjacent line in their path, they will follow that path and continue upwards.
This game will have 6 different sections of the Amidakuji, but the concept remains the same. The layout of the Amidakuji will also be random each time you play the game. When you do reach the sixth screen of the Amidakuji, you will reach the endings for the game. There are three possible endings that you can get, and it is possible to see them all if you are playing with three people.
You will notice some other things that are on the screen. The necklace on the right side of the screen represents the health of the current character. Each bead on the necklace will represent a unit of health. Note that your health will not regenerate at all during the game. The only way to heal in this game is from the mini-games themselves, or from the special Ten Ten square. I will explain how to get health back in more detail in their respective squares.
The last thing you will notice is that there are random squares in the Amidakuji. These squares are mini-games that your character can challenge. If you move across one of these squares, you will play a mini-game with only that character. Each square will represent its own mini-game, so refer to the sections below for more information on them. There are five different squares in the game. Four of the squares are mini-games, while the fifth square is the special Ten Ten square. Ten Ten is an important character in the Kyonshies series, just in case you were wondering.
If you look at the pictures above, there is one mini-game square. Only player 2 will reach it, as the square is only in his path. It is possible for a character to not play a mini-game in a section of the Amidakuji, like in the pictures above with players 1 and 3.
If for any reason a Kyonshi runs out of health, that character will be shown a game over screen. That Kyonshi will also be taken off the Amidakuji for the rest of the game. If there are any more Kyonshies left in the game, they will continue playing. If there are no more Kyonshies left in the game, you will be brought back to the title screen.
Mini-Game Squares
This is the main focus of the game. There are four different mini-games in the game with one special square. These squares are placed randomly on the Amidakuji, so the games you will encounter will be different each time you play. If you encounter a mini-game square, refer to the corresponding section of the guide. The pictures on the squares will show you what mini-game you are about to play, so use that for your reference.
| Square | Description |
|---|---|
| Forest | |
| Water | |
| Temple | |
| Shrine | |
| Ten Ten (Special Square) |
Remember to stand on the red buttons (buttons 6 and 7) before you start a mini-game, as that is the default standing position for these mini-games. To start the mini-game, press the red buttons again. Some mini-games may require you to start the game again if you get hit, drown, etc. Keep that in mind if that happens to you.
Mini-Game Square 1: Forest
- Forest

Controls
Stand on buttons 6 and 7: Move to the center.
Stand on buttons 5 and 6: Move to the left.
Stand on buttons 7 and 8: Move to the right.
Description
There will be a person at the top of the screen throwing swords at you. You will have to dodge the swords until the time runs out. The time limit is about one minute for this mini-game. If you get hit by a sword, you will lose a half a bead. Each time that you get hit, you will have to start the game again. After you get hit, the time limit will be were you left off. There are power ups that you can get, which will help you out in the mini-game. Below are the power ups that you can get.
| Power Up | Description |
|---|---|
| Gives you temporary invincibility for about 5 seconds. | |
| Recovers 1 bead of health. | |
| Ends the mini-game. Extremely rare. |
Advice/Tips

This mini-game will play the same as the shrine mini-game. The enemy at the top of the screen will throw swords straight down towards you. It is really easy to dodge it however, since you will have time to move away. The swords themselves will move somewhat fast, but it still should not be too much of a problem. Stick to one side of the stage and wait for the enemy to throw a sword from directly above you. When this happens, move out of the way. Rinse and repeat until the time limit runs out. Even if you get hit, it will only take away a half a bead from you. The banana power up in this mini-game will heal one bead of health, so there is a good chance that you can recover more health than you actually lost. Be careful if you are trying to get a power up. The sword thrown by the enemy will move faster than the power up itself, so it is possible to get hit by the sword before you pick up the power up.
Mini-Game Square 2: Water
- Water

Controls
Let go of buttons 6 and 7 at the same time (by jumping off of it): Jump forward from the center.
Let go of buttons 5 and 6 at the same time (by jumping off of it): Jump forward from the left.
Let go of buttons 7 and 8 at the same time (by jumping off of it): Jump forward from the right.
Hit 6 and 7 at the same time (by landing on it): Land to the center.
Hit 5 and 6 at the same time (by landing on it): Land to the left.
Hit 7 and 8 at the same time (by landing on it): Land to the right.
Description
You will be jumping across logs to reach the other side of the screen. You must jump from your current position on the screen, and then you can land on any side of the screen. There are a total of two screens in which you have to jump across logs. If you fall into the water, you will lose one bead of health and be sent back to the bottom of the screen you are currently on.
Advice/Tips

The most important thing to remember if you are playing on a keyboard or another controller is that you will have to simulate yourself landing after you jump. When you are playing the game normally on the Family Trainer, your feet will always be on the buttons. When you jump, you will be letting go of the buttons, and then you will land back on to the buttons. To simulate this on a keyboard or controller, you will need to press the buttons you used to jump again to make the game think that you have landed. If you do not do this, you will not land on any of the logs.
Other than that, the mini-game itself is really easy. You do not have a time limit, so you can take as much time as you need. This is also the shortest mini-game in the game that you can play.
Mini-Game Square 3: Temple
- Temple

Controls
Hop on buttons 6 and 7 at the same time: Move forward from the center.
Hop on buttons 5 and 6 at the same time: Move forward from the left.
Hop on buttons 7 and 8 at the same time: Move forward from the right.
Description
You will be on a temple path with various enemies on it. The enemies themselves will move horizontally in a certain pattern. If you touch one of them, you will lose one bead of health and be sent back to the bottom of the screen you are currently on. There are a total of four screens for this mini-game.
Advice/Tips

Remember that you cannot move backwards in this mini-game. The enemies themselves are not too hard to dodge. When you reach an enemy, just wait and watch their movements. Their patterns will never change, so use that to your advantage. You can also move in between the enemies if there are two of them on the screen. In this case, you can focus on one enemy at a time. I recommend that you do this if there are two enemies, as they tend to be on opposite sides from each other. There is no time limit, so take your time and you should be able to complete this mini-game with little problems. The locations of the enemies will be random each time you play it, but there will never be more than two enemies on the screen at once. Note that if you touch the enemy sprite from anywhere, it will count as a hit. This includes the tip of their hands or head. This will make their hit box somewhat larger than the game depicts it to be.
Mini-Game Square 4: Shrine
- Shrine

Controls
Stand on buttons 6 and 7: Move to the center.
Stand on buttons 5 and 6: Move to the left.
Stand on buttons 7 and 8: Move to the right.
Description
There will be a person at the top of the screen throwing charms (ofuda) at you. You will have to dodge the charms until the time runs out. The time limit is about one minute for this mini-game. If you get hit by a charm, you will lose a half a bead.
Advice/Tips

This mini-game will play the same as the forest mini-game. The enemy at the top of the screen will throw charms straight down towards you. These charms may be tricky to dodge, as the charms will move slowly in a wavy pattern. For this reason, this mini-game is slightly harder than the forest mini-game. Stick to one side of the stage and wait for the enemy to throw a charm from directly above you. When this happens, move out of the way. Rinse and repeat until the time limit runs out. Even if you get hit, it will only take away a half a bead from you. The banana power up will heal one bead of health, so there is a good chance that you can recover more health than you actually lost. Remember that if any part of the charm touches you, it will count as a hit. The charms will have big hit boxes, since they do move in a weird wavy motion.
Special Square: Ten Ten
- Ten Ten
Description
This is not a mini-game. This is a special square that only occurs on the fifth section of the Amidakuji. There is only one of these squares in any given play through, which means that only one player can reach this square. When you reach this square, you will get a cut scene with Ten Ten. Ten Ten is an important character in the Kyonshies series, as mentioned in the Game Basics section of the guide. She will recover your heath back to full after the cut scene is over. You will then continue the Amidakuji like normal. The cut scene is listed below, along with a rough translation.
[Ten Ten] - "Good work. Go and rest a little! You will recover some life."
[Ten Ten] - "Here is a little Good Luck!"
Endings
Note: This section will contain spoilers! It should be obvious though, as this section will show all of the endings in the game.
When all of the characters playing reach the sixth section of the Amidakuji, you will start seeing some different squares. These squares will be labeled with the letters A, B, and C.
![]()
These are the different endings in the game. You can probably guess that there are three endings in the game; however, the three different endings will be placed randomly in the lettered squares. You will not know which ending you get until you reach the ending squares, even if you have played through the game before. There is only one good ending in the game, while the other two are considered bad endings. The good news is that if you are playing with three people and they all make it to their endings, everyone will see all of the endings.
I will list all of the endings in this section with their rough translations. I will also show you what the game over screen will look like, since I haven't shown it yet. To skip an ending, press the START button. If I have made a mistake in the translations, feel free to contact me with the correction. My Japanese is terrible, so mistakes are bound to happen. More information about this can be found in the "Final Words" section of the guide.
After everyone has seen their endings, you will be shown another message from the developers of the game. You will get this message no matter which ending you get, or how many players are playing the game. I will call this the "Game End Message" in this section. After the Game End Message, press the START button to go back to the title screen.
Congratulations! You have completed Family Trainer: Rai Rai Kyonshis: Baby Kyonshi no Amida Daibouken!

[Ten Ten] - "I know you can! Good Luck!"

Intriguing work on the Power Pad game "Rai Rai Kyonshis: Baby Kyonshi no Amida Daibouken".
Thank you for purchasing the game. Thank you and please continue to support Bandai's future on the Famicom.
Game Over Screen
Note: If for any reason a Kyonshi runs out of health, that character will be shown a game over screen. That Kyonshi will also be taken off the Amidakuji for the rest of the game. If there are any more Kyonshies left in the game, they will continue playing. If there are no more Kyonshis left in the game, you will be brought back to the title screen.
