Not Just Your Average Bea-- err Space Shooter

Probably one of the most overlooked, unknown, shooter games for the NES, Gyruss is excellent for it's time period. Unlike most boring side-scrolling galaga/space invaders clones, Gyruss has a unique style of gameplay..

Story 5/10: ''-A.D. 25XX- Mankind must get rid the universe of evil. It's a death defying risk, and only a hero can succeed.'' Basically, you must save the universe by shooting aliens/ships/weird space things and some strange alien cloak dude. You start at Neptune, and once you rid the planet of it's extraterrestrials, you can advance to the next planet, Pluto, and so on and so forth. (Pluto?! Isn't that the last planet?! - During their orbits, there is a part where they cross and Neptune is outside Pluto's orbit.)

Gameplay 9/10: This is where the game really shines. Unlike your traditional front view shooters (Space Invaders, Galaga, etc) your gameplay is in a tunnel-like structure. You can move on the edge of the circle all the way around, which leads to many different angles of shooting. Enemies will fly into view like Galaga, then head out into the distance where you will fight them again. You should try to shoot them as they fly in and keep shooting at them when they're far away so you have less to deal with. Sometimes power-ups appear which allow you to shoot 2 bullets at once. Also, you can shoot a charged blast every once in a while, which can knock out bosses and/or several small enemies. You face polygon like bosses, which usually consist of 4 parts. You'll have to move around your circular path in order to defeat each part of the boss.

Sound/Music 10/10: I LOVE this game's music. It's well done and very catchy. I play this game often just to listen to the music, XD. Sound effects are okay, mostly when you shoot, hit something, or blast off to the next section/planet.

Graphics 6/10: The graphics are so-so. They're better than some NES games, but not the best. The enemy/ship sprites are decent, but I don't know what they were thinking when they made some of those boss sprites.. *shudders*

Replay Value 7/10: This game is very addicting as most shooter games go, but it has a feeling of wantingtokeepplaying whenever you shut off your NES.. The gameplay can get a tad repetitive at times, but there's enough action to keep you busy.

SUMMARY 7/10:This has got to be one of my favorite space shooters of all time. It's unique gameplay, catchy music, and fast-paced action should keep gamers of all generations satisfied like Yogi Bear after a Pic-a-nic.

Rating:   3.5 - Good
