The Worst Japanese RPG ever made

Mere words can't tell you just how awful Super Monkey Daibouken is. It was a Famicom RPG release in 1986 by VAP (creators of Isolated Warrior). The game is based on the tale, Journey to the West (that's right otakus, the same chinese folklore that Dragonball was originally based on).

In the beggining of the game, you control Sun Hou-tzu and Hsuang Tsang who are apparently stuck in a stranded island for some reason. No specifics is ever given to where you need to go, so it's up to you to blindly search the island until you are magically transported to another area. The non-battle scenes takes place in a overhead view like all traditional RPGs, only your characters are always facing to the left or right. This scenes are slow and all the areas look similar to each other. Once in a while you will stumble in a house in which the person living there will give you some useless hint.

The battle scenes (which happens rarely) consist of side-scrolling scenes like Zelda II, only the enemies are stupid and they rarely do damage to you at all. By pressing the Jump button during midair you get to ride the Sun's Magic Cloud and if press Start sometimes, you get to turn into a dragon for some reason. Hsuang also comes out to barely help you once in a while. If for some reason Sun is killed, you must then control Huang, who can't attack at all, but seems to do damage by touching the enemy and pressing one of the attack button. There seems to be other party members as well, but I didn't bother to play long enough to even care. There doesn't seem to be any way to customize your characters or to regain health.

The graphics are awful (even for a 1986 game), backgrounds are repetive and the music is non-existant.

Thankfully this turkey was release in Japan-only, but if you happen to be in a Japanese flea market and find this game, please try to stay away from it as far as possible. OK, you can buy if you want to, but don't say I didn't warn you. If you think that the Dragon Warrior/Final Fantasy series is overrated, play this game and you will probably change your mind a little bit.
