While Tetris was conceptualized in 1984, Alexey Pajitnov - the man with the driving idea - was scarcely profited until 1996. Tetris was originally developed as a military and AI intelligence test using pentimos (arrangements of five squares) that were eventually cut down into the seven blocks (tetriminos, using four blocks) we use today. Because it for research and for the government, Pajitnov received no funding for the game itself. He ultimately distributed it freely (amongst other PC games); a Hungarian company caught wind of it, bought the rights to it, and it snowballed into its modern success.
Tetris pioneered Falling Blocks puzzle games. And also the "simple puzzle" genre.
