The Mario Brothers, before they became super
This is the game that started it all. Every Mario game, and there are lots of them, owes its creation to this game. The original Donkey Kong is also a factor in Mario's success, but this game tells the original story of the Mario Brothers. The first chapter in the lives of the Mario Brothers. Before they began rescuing the Princess, defeating King Koopa, Bowser, or Wario, and before Mario and Luigi discovered they were talented in so many different sports; they were plumbers.
What could be better then taking care of a few plumbing problems? Well according to Nintendo in 1983, nothing. Bad concept, yes. Bad game, no way! Mario Bros. is an awesome game in its own right and from it, many characters that we know and love today were spawned in the process.
Gameplay - 8/10
Simply put, you play as Mario and you must quickly move through the sewer, hit the enemy, and then hurry and hit them again before they get up and come back twice as strong. The POW button, located near the center of the sewer, instantly knocks over all enemies. The game is even more fun when you team up with a fried. The gameplay may be simple, but the game is amazingly fun, especially with two people.
Story - 10/10
Mario and his brother Luigi must take care of some plumbing problems. You must fight against the mean turtles, flies, and crabs that come out of the sewer pipes. This is the story that created the legend. TV shows, movies, comics, games, action figures, dolls, games, hats, shirts, and most of all: games, were all created from the simple story developed in Mario Bros. For this reason, it surely deserves a 10.
Graphics/Visual Effects - 7/10
For 1983, the graphics in Mario Bros. were pretty good. Nice colors were used in the character sprites and the pipes and ledges. Other than that, the graphics are nothing special.
Audio - 8/10
The music, where there is music, is pretty catchy, but during the actual playing of the stages, there's no music. The opening music on the menu screen is top notch for its time though. The ''Game Over'' music is good too, let's just hope you never have to hear it.
Replay Value - 8/10
Replaying the game with a friend is pretty fun, but replaying the game by yourself can be rather boring.
To Be or Not to Be?
If you have this game, consider yourself lucky. You own the cornerstone of the Nintendo empire. The first Mario game for Nintendo, the creation of their current mascot. Mario is now probably more recognized by kids than Mickey Mouse. If you can find this game, definitely pick it up.
Overall - 8/10
One of my favorites for the NES. Despite its simplicity, the game is very fun to play.
Rating: 4.0 - Great
