  • This game's manual is a direct translation of the Japanese version, which led to an infamous error with the description of the Pols Voice enemy. This enemy is said to hate sound, and thus many NES players mistook to mean that they should use the recorder. In reality, they were meant to use the microphone on the second controller. However, that only applies to the Famicom Disk System release of the game as the NES does not have any such microphones, so the Pols Voice enemy was much harder to beat as a result.

  • Miyamoto stated the inspiration for the gameplay was based off of his hikes in Japan through the forest and hills, upon which he would find surprising discoveries such as lakes. The thrill of adventure and discovery he felt later inspired him to create the same emotions in Legend of Zelda.

  • Early in the game's development, players were given the sword automatically. Early playtesters found the nonlinear gameplay confusing and difficult and often complained of this. Rather than alleviate the problem, Miyamoto hid the sword which forced them to communicate. He stated that this created a new form of game communication which later inspired another game: Animal Crossing.

  • Originally, this game was planned to have a "create your own dungeon" system, inspired by the Famicom Disk System's ability to rewrite data and contain more than a simple NES cartridge. When Nintendo was playtesting the idea, however, they found the playing of the dungeons to be more fun than their creation, and ultimately focused that developmental aspect towards the creation of several preset dungeons and scrapped the "create your own dungeon" system entirely.

  • According to Shigeru Miyamoto, Link's name is derived from him being the link between two time periods. Originally, the Legend of Zelda was to take place in two separate time periods (a past and a future). Additionally, the pieces of the Triforce were originally planned to be electronic chips.

  • When the original development of The Legend of Zelda was completed, the development team discovered that the entire quest only took up less space than they thought it would. It was there they decided that they could put a whole new adventure in the remaining space, which resulted in the now-famous Second Quest.
