The original Japanese version of the game was titled Sensha Senryaku: Sabaku no Kitsune, or literally Tank Strategy: Desert Fox. This title came from the fact that the game was set during the North African Campaign of World War II, in which the Allied Forces led by Generals George S. Patton and Bernard Montgomery were engaged in battle with the Axis Forces led by General Erwin Rommel, who went by the nickname of Desert Fox.

When the game was localized as Desert Commander, the factions were unnamed and the conflict itself was set in a generic desert location. This may have stemmed from Nintendo of America's policy against references to hate groups (in this case, the Nazis.)
