When progressing through a level, the game locks Mario or Luigi at 112 pixels from the left side of the screen as the screen scrolls, preventing players from moving the character closer to the right side of the screen. It was later discovered through speedrunning and tool-assisted playthroughs that bumping Mario or Luigi off of certain walls will push him forward more pixels than the game normally allows. If you manage to push yourself enough pixels forward, and then go down a pipe while pushed forward further than normal, the game will send you to a different bonus room since the game thinks you're further back in the level than you really are. This is the technique that allows players to complete World 4-2 as fast as possible.
