  • The origin of the game's name is a point of contingency amongst fans. Originally titled "Fighting Fantasy", the game's name was changed later in production. According to Hironobu Sakaguchi, he changed the name of the game as it was intended it to be his final video game before he quit and returned to school. However, according to Nobuo Uematsu, the game's name was changed because Square was on the verge of bankruptcy and thought it could be the company's final game.

  • The iconic prelude to this game, which has been featured in some form in every Final Fantasy game hereafter, was composed and made in a mere five minutes, making it the most rushed piece of music in the series.

  • The Intelligence stat in this game was intended to affect damage dealt by spells, but a programming error prevents it from being properly used. In fact, it's not used at all! Because of this, a White Mage's Cure, for example, is just as effective as that of a Red Mage.

  • In this release of Final Fantasy, there are a number of weapons who are supposed to have special abilities which never activate. These include:
    - Were Sword - Does not inflict more damage on Were-creatures.
    - Rune Sword - Does not inflict more damage on magic-using or supernatural creatures.
    - Dragon Sword - Does not inflict more damage on Dragon and dragon-kin creatures.
    - Coral Sword - Does not inflict more damage on sea creatures.
    - Giant Sword - Does not inflict more damage on Giants/Ogres or their kin.
    - Flame Sword - Does not inflict more damage on Fire-weak, undead, or regenerative creatures.
    - Ice Sword - Does not inflict more damage on Ice-weak creatures.
    - Sun Sword - Does not inflict more damage on undead creatures.
    - Light Axe - Does not inflict more damage on undead creatures.
    - Xcaliber - Does not inflict more damage on every creature-type and elemental weakness.

  • There are a number of spells in this game that do not work as designed, if at all:
    - Tmpr, Sabr: These two don't work
    - Xfer: The target must be the in the party or it fails
    - Lock: Never hits
    - Lok2: Actually increases enemy evasion by 20%, not lowers
    - Hel2: Works as Hel3 in battles

Connection to Other Media

  • In Elfheim, one of the graves reads "Here lies Erdrick". This is a reference to Dragon Warrior's legendary hero and was inspired by Square and Enix's then rivalry. The text was changed in later versions to "Here lies Link", a reference to Legend of Zelda's Link.
