How can you get the bonus points from the Extreme Contest?

Every now and then I'll get an extra bonus point for first place, the usual points given is eight but I'll receive nine at the end of certain races. I'm trying to beat the Meltdown races but I just can't get that elusive bonus point. I'm trying to beat it as much as possible before I have to cheat, lol.

Sadly, 9 is the highest score you can get.
