Bowser and King Dedede were even playable but Bowser was cut during late development, King Dedede was removed because of lack of development time and possible hardware limitations, and Mewtwo was scrapped due to lack of development time.

  • Masahiro Sakurai wanted to make his game as original as possible as he was under the impression that fighting games did not sell well. For this reason, he wanted to use Nintendo brand characters for the game, but likely could not get permission as he was assigned with HAL Laboratories. Sakurai developed a prototype of the game without consent or awareness from Nintendo and did not reveal the prototype to Nintendo until he was sure the game was well-balanced. Nintendo ultimately approved his idea.

  • In conceiving ideas for Super Smash Bros, director Masahiro Sakurai first pitched the idea of a multiplayer fighting game to future Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, who helped him continue development.

  • The original Super Smash Bros. had a very limited budget and little promotion, as the project was initially a simple side project by Masahiro Sakurai that Satoru Iwata let him do on weekends. After Sakurai presented the partial product to Iwata, he asked if he could use several Nintendo characters in an effort to make it more original. The game's surprise success led to the sequels having a much more lavish budget, as seen in the much bigger cast, stage selection, and more complex moves.
