Game Trivia

Originally, in lieu of Majora's Mask, Nintendo was to develop an expansion to Ocarina of Time known as "Ura Zelda". (This was to be a Nintendo 64DD title that was to be localized as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time/Master Quest.) Eji Aonuma protested this idea, and Shigeru Miyamoto angrily challenged Aonuma to make a sequel to Ocarina of Time, then, and to do so in less than a year. Should he succeed, Ura Zelda was to not be made.

Aonuma ultimately succeeded with this venture. The project for Ura Zelda was scrapped for the time, though Master Quest eventually made it to the GameCube in compilation with the original Ocarina of Time as well.

The concept of allowing time travel in this game (via the Ocarina of Time) and using it to varying results was inspired partially by the film "Run Lola Run". Majora's Mask thus started originally as a much-smaller game, limited to seven days in a minuscule world filled to the brim with content.

The heads of the Moon children suggest that they closely resemble the Happy Mask Salesman. This suggests that the Salesman is the spirit of the little good that is inside Majora's Mask.

Much of the graphical and mechanical aspects of this game were ported hastily over from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. For the most part, there were no significant errors in this, However, the Hylian language often was left unchanged. For example, the archyway at the Romani Ranch in Majora's Mask is the same as the Kakariko Village archway in Ocarina of Time, but still reads "Welcome to Kakariko Village" in Hylian.

The little aesthetic detail where Gorons love to play the bongos was added at the insistence of Eiji Aonuma. The bongos are among his favorite instruments.

The game's extra memory allows for greater draw distances, more accurate dynamic lighting, more detailed texture mapping and animation, complex framebuffer effects such as motion blur, and more characters displayed on-screen. The newly expanded draw distance allows the player to see much farther and eliminates the need for the fog effect that can be seen in Ocarina of Time.

Because the graphics and game engine of Ocarina of Time were reused, Majora's Mask was made by a much smaller team and took only one year to make.

Director Eiji Aonuma was faced with the difficult task of creating a game to follow up Ocarina of Time. The critical and commercial success of Ocarina set the bar high for the team who developed Majora's Mask.

In your inventory screen, when you finish up the third row of masks, you'll notice that they are masks of a fox, bird, frog, rabbit, and pig in order. Nintendo included it as a reference to their popular Star Fox franchise: they mirror its characters Fox, Falco, Slippy, Peppy, and Pigma.

When you visit Zora Hall, pay attention to the music that each character plays in their respective rooms. Japas plays the Underworld theme from the original Legend of Zelda, Evan plays the Game Over theme from the same game, and Tijo plays the Dungeon/Cave theme from A Link to the Past.
