ECW Was Classic, This Game However...
In 2000, ECW was on it's last legs, having only a year left before their untimely bankruptcy. This game was to be on of their last efforts for mainstream acceptance after TNN failed to properly advertise. Unfortunately, this game would have been better off being made by AKI in the style of No Mercy.
Gameplay: This game does not capture the ECW style in the slightest, instead bringing a slow feel much like the WWF in the late 90's, which is when the game engine originated. The engine, which first appeared in 1998's WWF War Zone, does not capture the fast paced, hard hitting style of ECW. This game feels less like a wrestling game, and more like an ECW version of Street Fighter with all the combinations needed to pull off big moves.
Graphics: Here is where the War Zone engine really shines. All of the ECW wrestlers are represented here in realistic detail, thanks to digital technology. The ring is just like an actual wrestling ring, which is always a good thing. However, the crowd is not very detailed, leaving a surreal sight to see.
Sound: The infamous ECW fans are represented here, in a way. What there is is a mixture of chants, and heckles that some sound like they never have been shouted at a wrestling event.
Despite the lack of audience participation, the sounds of wrestlers hitting the mat and repetitive commentary by Joey Styles (this is the only time I have hated to hear Styles call a match) make the sound in this game mediocre, and we have heard most of this stuff before.
Roster: The roster is a great redeeming value to this game, from then ECW mainstays such as the dark Raven and his rival, the ever popular Tommy Dreamer and others such as Mike Awesome, Steve Corino, and Rhino make up a great lineup of then ECW wrestlers. Also in the game are a few legendary characters such as Beulah McGilicutty and The Sheik (even though he never set foot in an ECW ring, he was a hardcore mainstay in the 70's) bring the roster to great proportions.
Is It Any Fun?: If you liked ECW and the WWF Warzone engine, this game is an OK game. But, if you want the real style of ECW, fire up a hardcore match in Smackdown or No Mercy and bring out the ECW CAWs.
Overall: An average 5/10
Rating: 2.5 - Playable
