1. About This Game
------------------
Majou Densetsu II: Galious no Meikyuu (lit. Demon Castle Legend II: The Maze of
Galious) is a side-scrolling action adventure game produced and released by
Konami on April 18, 1987 for the MSX Personal Computer in Japan. It was also
released in Europe that same year. Apparently, it was popular enough in Japan to
warrant a Famicom/NES adaptation four months later, titled Majou Densetsu II:
Dai Ma Shikyou Galious (lit. Demon Castle Legend II: Great Demon Priest
Galious). This version, released only in Japan, was significantly redesigned,
and also halved from 10 Worlds to 5 Worlds.

It was the second game in Konami's Knightmare trilogy; all three titles were
released for the MSX. This trilogy was unique in that each game had a radically
different genre. The first game was a top-view shooter that scrolled vertically.
The third and final game was titled Shalom: Knightmare III, and was a top-view
adventure that relied on command menus, much like LucasArts' point-and-click
titles. The trilogy was set in Ancient Greece.

The Maze of Galious is often considered by many MSX fans to be one of the most
beloved titles on the computer, along with both Metal Gear games. I like to
think of this game as the equivalent to a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup. This game
takes elements of Zelda, as well as elements of Metroid. An awesome, and at
times creepy soundtrack, compliments this game quite nicely. If you're looking
for an old-school Zelda-like adventure, I highly recommend this title. There may
be a few cryptic moments in this game that you wouldn't ever figure out on your
own, common in so many action adventure games of the 8-bit era, so that's what
this guide is for.

--------
2. Story
--------
This game is set immediately after the events of the original Knightmare. After
Popolon rescued his beloved wife Aphrodite from the clutches of the evil Hudnos,
it turned out to be a trap. While Popolon was away, Galious, the evil high
priest, sold his soul to the Devil, and invaded Castle Greek, turning it into a
world of evil. He also kidnapped Pampas from the Heavens, who was supposed to be
born to Popolon & Aphrodite several years later. (Wait, how is that even
remotely possible? But then again, it's a video game, and who cares if it makes
sense or doesn't?) It is now up to Popolon & Aphrodite to recapture all 10
Worlds, and rescue their unborn son.

--------------
3. How To Play
--------------
-----------------------
3.1 Popolon & Aphrodite
-----------------------
They're the happily married husband & wife you play as. You can switch them
anytime you want by pressing the F1 key and making your selection. Popolon wears
a blue armor, and Aphrodite wears a pink one. Both players have differences that
set them apart; use them to get through certain sections of the game that you
have trouble with. Some items can alter some of these disadvantages. There are
also some Worlds that Popolon can't enter, and some that Aphrodite can't. (More
information on that in Section 4)

*Popolon's jump differs in length of time, depending on how long the jump button
is pressed; Aphrodite's jumping has a set time.

*Popolon can fire two arrow shots; Aphrodite can fire three.

*Popolon can set two mines; Aphrodite can set three.

*Popolon can destroy rocks after three hits; Aphrodite can do it in fifteen.

*Popolon can pass through revolving doors; Aphrodite can't.

*Popolon's strength declines rapidly underwater; Aphrodite's strength remains
slow.

-------------------------
3.2 Vitality & Experience
-------------------------
Your vitality (life force) starts at 32 units. It increases by 32 each time a
Great Key is collected. The meter can be increased as many as five times for
both heroes, for a maximum of 192.

Your experience increases everytime you kill an enemy. Filling the meter will
restore your vitality.

------------------------------------
3.3 Heads Up Display & Option Window
------------------------------------
The Heads Up Display, HUD for short, is displayed on top of the screen. It
displays the Vitality & Experience for both heroes in the center. The
bottom-left corner shows your current location. On the right is the number of
Quivers of arrows, coins, and keys. Also on the right is the secondary weapon
currently in use.

The Option Window (accessible by pressing the F1 key) displays the heroes on top
that can be selected. The middle displays the items collected; 30 slots can be
filled up. The bottom-right corner displays your secondary weapons in a window,
and just above that are the special items, most of them can be found in the
Worlds. The bottom-left corner is the Dungeon Map. The red dot is your current
location; the blue dot is where the Great Demon is hiding.

------------
3.4 Controls
------------
Left & Right Keys = Moves left and right. Also selects character and weapons, as
well as makes item selections.

F1 Key = Displays option window. Press again to return to the game screen.

F2 Key = Pauses game. Press again to resume the action. In what appears to be a
funny bit of toilet humor, Popolon or Aphrodite take a shit on a toilet in pause
mode! The original Knightmare had Popolon taking a nap.

A-Z Keys = Use them to type secret spells in the room with the Great Demon.

--------------------
3.5 Saving & Loading
--------------------
To save the game, you'll have to go up three screens from the starting point to
enter Demeter's Password Shrine. (more information on the Gods and Shrines in
Section 5) You'll be asked if you want the secret code to waken her memory and
keep the records about you. Say "Yes", and you'll be given a 45-letter password.

To load the game, press the L key on the title screen, and type the password you
wrote down. You can correct any mistakes you may make by pressing the Left Key,
and changing the wrong letters. Press the Return Key. If it is correct, the game
will resume where you left off.

-------
6. Tips
-------
*You can choose whatever you feel is the best course of action, but I found it
best to go around the Castle, collecting all the stuff that you can get until
you enter World 1. You also get the Shields in the order that you're supposed to
get them in. This walkthrough will demonstrate exactly that.

*Try combining it with these other Konami games:
**Knightmare: Popolon or Aphrodite can be revived 99 times in Death's shrine.
**Q*Bert: Start with full vitality and 100 Arrows, Coins, and Keys.

*Stock up on as many keys and arrows as possible when you have enough money. The
best place to do so is at Ares' Shrine by warping to World 7.

*If your sword makes a sound when you strike a wall, that means there is a
secret passage.

*Conserve keys as much as you can by looking for ways around locked doors.

--------------
7. Walkthrough
--------------
------------------
7.1 Before World 1
------------------
Castle Greek consists of 156 screens. There are 10 Worlds, and when you combine
all the screens in those Worlds alone, it adds up to 174. All new items and
secret spells will be capitalized.

1. Begin by going left one screen from the starting point. Inside the boulder is
the ANGEL RING. With it, you can teleport to Demeter's password shrine (F1 +
ENTER).

2. Go back right twice. Inside the top boulder is the GREAT KEY. You will need
it to open the world portal. It also increases your vitality. Alternate each
time you pick one up so that Popolon and Aphrodite get equal vitality.

3. Go back left twice, and down one screen. Smash the bottom boulders for a key.
Go back up one screen, and right two screens. Go down one screen, and right one
screen. Smash the top-right boulder for the ARROW, a common weapon. Press M to
fire your secondary weapon.

4. As some way of conserving keys, go left one screen, down, and right one
screen. Go down one screen, and left one screen. Smash the top boulder for the
BELL. It will ring when you are approaching the next world.

5. Stock up on $50, and go down one screen. Smash the left boulder to find the
BOOTS. They will increase the speed of both heroes.

6. Go right two screens, and enter Ares' shrine. Buy the COPPER SHIELD worth
$30. It will protect you from shots from small Monsters.

7. Next, buy the MAGNIFYING GLASS for $20. You will need it to look at
tombstones in the worlds to find the secret spells (Press M in front of a
tombstone to use it).

8. Go up two screens, and smash the middle boulder for a key. Go through the
middle passageway, and smash the boulder to find a LAMP. It marks the room of
the Guardian on the world map.

9. Conserve keys by going back one screen and down a floor, right two screens
and up the ladder, left one screen, up the ladder, right two screens, and smash
the top-right boulder for such item. Go to the top left path, and left two
screens. Stand directly above the left side of the boulder, facing left, and the
rings will form a Fairy to replenish your vitality. Go right one screen and up
two ladders one screen. Go right one screen on the top path, and up two screens,
climbing ladders. Smash the boulder for money. Go back down a screen, and smash
the leftmost boulder. This is Death's shrine. If either Popolon or Aphrodite
dies, one of them can be resurrected, but it can only be done once. You'll need
salt, 100 ammo, $100, and 100 keys. Go up one screen, left two screens on the
bottom path while conserving keys (and collecting one under the bottom boulder),
and a dead end will close behind you. Go down two screens to land on two small
platforms. Jump up to the wall and strike it. You will open up a secret passage.
There's some money inside, and jump up inside to go through the wall. Go a step
left, and jump directly left twice until you reach the next screen. Inside is
the CROSS. You'll need it to defeat Galious.

10. Go back to Demeter's shrine, and go right one screen, up one screen, and
smash the boulder for a key. Drop down and go right two screens. Climb down the
ladders and smash the boulder to get the CANDLE. You'll need it to see the walls
in the room with the rod item in World 5.

11. Go up one screen, and down another. Next, climb the ladder and go right
three screens through the locked door. Drop down two screens, and go right
through the locked door. Smash the far right boulder for the ammunition, which
is used for all your weapons. Go to the top and go right one screen. Go up two
screens and left another. Keep climbing to pick up the ROLLING FIRE. It rotates
around the platform the player is on.

12. Climb back down, go right one screen, and drop down two screens. Go left one
screen, drop down to the bottom, and go right one screen. Drop all the way down
two screens, until you hit the ground. Walk right and drop down another screen.
Smash the boulder for money, and using the vertical lift as a guide, ride it up
top to the horizontal lift and go left one screen. Drop down, go down one
screen, and smash the boulder to get the key. Go right one screen, and drop down
left into the bottom passageway for another screen. Go down one screen to pick
up the ammunition inside the boulder. Go left one screen and smash the boulder
to get the SALT. You'll need it to enter Death's shrine.

13. Go right one screen, up another, right one screen, and using the vertical
lift as a guide, ride it until you can get off on the right side. Go down one
screen (the nearby ladder disappears), drop down, and smash the boulder to get
the FIRE. It travels on the platform the player is on and falls onto the next.

14. Climb up two sets of ladders, smash the boulder to get the money, and go
back to Demeter's shrine. Go right one screen, up one screen, dropping down on
the right side one screen, right two screens, up one screen, going right and
dropping down one screen, up the ladder and right three screens through a locked
door (skipping the other one), drop down two screens, and right two screens
through a locked door, taking the bottom path. Fall down two screens, and take
the vertical lift up four screens. Smash the boulder for ammunition, then go
right one screen, and up another. Smash the top boulder to get the BRACELET,
which will allow Popolon to put 3 mines instead of 2.

15. Go down one screen, and left one screen, using the vertical lift as a guide.
Go up one screen, and smash the top boulder to enter Ares' shrine. Buy the
SILVER SHIELD for $40, which will protect you from shots from all monsters
except for the bosses.

16. Go left one screen, smash the top boulder for the ammunition, and go up two
screens on the vertical lift to get the money from the boulder. Go up on the
vertical lift another screen, right through the locked door, and drop down all
the way to the bottom to pick up the CROWN. It will protect you from the White
Witches.

17. Climb up the ladder one screen, go right one screen, and drop down on the
right shaft one screen. Smash the bottom boulder for the ammunition, then climb
up the ladders to get the money inside another boulder. Go up one screen, smash
the top boulder for a key, go up one screen all the way to the very top, and
smash the boulder to get the PITCHER. It will protect you from the fireballs.

18. Go left one screen, and go up another. Cross the horizontal lift, and smash
the left boulder to enter Ares' shrine. Buy the HAT HELMET for $50, which will
increase your defense.

19. Go down one screen, right another, down two screens, left two screens
through the locked door, and up two screens with the vertical lift. Smash the
left boulder to get the ARMOR, which will protect you from the bamboo shots.

20. Ride the vertical lift down one screen, and go left to pick up the money
under the bottom-left boulder. Go back right, and ride the vertical lift down
another screen, jumping left. Kill all the enemies on screen, and the HOI will
magically appear for you to pick up. It will flip the directions in World 8.

21. Go left one screen, down another, and smash the bottom boulder to enter
Hephaestus' shrine. Buy the CONCH SHELL for $25, which will allow Aphrodite to
enter World 5.

22. Go up one screen, right one screen, take the upper-left path through two
screens to collect some money, and take the upper path get more money. Watch out
for the dead end. Go down one screen, and smash the bottom boulder to enter
Asclepius' shrine. There, he tells you to see a Fairy to restore your vitality.
Go up one screen, and take the upper pathway right one screen. Ride the vertical
lift up one screen, and smash the boulder to get the RING. It will allow
Aphrodite to smash the boulders in 3 hits instead of 15.

23. Ride the vertical shaft up one screen, and go left one screen. Stand
straight left with part of your helmet touching the left side of the window, and
a Fairy will form. Go up one screen, right through the locked door for the
ammunition, and ride the vertical lift up two screens. Smash the top boulder to
enter Ares' shrine. Buy the GOLD SHIELD for $50, which will protect you from all
shots from all Monsters.

24. Go left two screens, taking the top path for some ammunition underneath the
boulder. Smash the left boulder for the WING, which will teleport you to a World
you've already cleared (F1 and #). Quickly destroy the closing gate with some
arrows and your sword.

25. Drop down five screens, and smash the right boulder to get a key. Go left
one screen, and defeat all the Bats. Next, get on the vertical left, and press
right, down, left, and up. A DAGGER will appear underneath the boulder. With it,
you can defeat all enemies (UMBRELLA).

Hephaestus' shrine. Buy the HARP for $30, which will reveal all boulders on a
single screen (SPACE).

boulder is the BIBLE, which will freeze enemies for only 15 times (CTRL).

32. Go back to Demeter's shrine, and drop down two screens. Go left three
screens through a locked door, and stand straight on the squared structure right
of the boulder. A Fairy will be formed. Go left two screens, and ride the
vertical lift down two screens, using the horizontal lift to go left one screen.
Go up another screen, and enter Hephaestus' shrine in the top boulder. Buy the
MINE for $30; be careful when laying them when trying to defeat your enemies.

horizontal lift to reach the BREAD & WATER. With them, Aphrodite will be able to
go through the revolving doors, which don't require a key.

get the PENDANT, which will make the decorative doll in World 2 appear.

breathe underwater. Get the TRIANGLE in the far-right boulder, which will
protect you against the white clouds in the Castle.

-------------
7.13 World 10
-------------
86. You are now ready for the final world. It is one of four different spots
each time you play:
*At the starting point. Go back to Demeter's shrine, and go down three screens.
*At the top-right corner of the castle. Warp to World 2, and go to the top
section and right three times on the bottom path. Ride the vertical lift up two
screens, and go left another. Go up one screen, and left another. Go up one
screen, and ride the vertical lift up two screens, and go right two screens. Go
up one screen, and right.
*At the upper-left corner of the castle. Warp to World 8, and go left one
screen, down two more, and left one screen.
*At the very top of the castle. Warp to World 9, and go down one screen, right
one screen, down one screen, and right one more. Once there, you'll see that it
is very straightforward, with only six rooms. Just grab the cloak, holy water,
and magic rod. Then, use the magnifying glass on the tombstone. The secret spell
is HAMALECH. Go right another screen to the boss' room. Type HAMALECH to summon
Galious. Disable the balls with your arrows, then fire away at him with your
rolling fire. Under normal circumstances, you need the cross to defeat him.
However, you can also use this trick.
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbyKihNSygA) There's still one more challenge
after this.

87. The final challenge is to find your unborn baby Pampas in the next room on
your right. He is in one of ten different boulders each time you play. If he is
not in that boulder, white ectoplasm will attack you. Once you find him, sit
back and enjoy the brief cutscene and staff roll.
