Demon Castle Legend II: The Maze of Galious) is a side-scrolling action adventure game produced and released by Konami on April 18, 1987 for the MSX Personal Computer in Japan. It was also released in Europe that same year. Apparently, it was popular enough in Japan to warrant a Famicom/NES adaptation four months later, titled Majou Densetsu II: Dai Ma Shikyou Galious (lit. Demon Castle Legend II: Great Demon Priest Galious). This version, released only in Japan, was significantly redesigned, and also halved from 10 Worlds to 5 Worlds. It was the second game in Konami's Knightmare trilogy; all three titles were released for the MSX. This trilogy was unique in that each game had a radically different genre. The first game was a top-view shooter that scrolled vertically. The third and final game was titled Shalom: Knightmare III, and was a top-view adventure that relied on command menus, much like LucasArts' point-and-click titles. The trilogy was set in Ancient Greece. The Maze of Galious is often considered by many MSX fans to be one of the most beloved titles on the computer, along with both Metal Gear games. I like to think of this game as the equivalent to a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup. This game takes elements of Zelda, as well as elements of Metroid. An awesome, and at times creepy soundtrack, compliments this game quite nicely. If you're looking for an old-school Zelda-like adventure, I highly recommend this title. There may be a few cryptic moments in this game that you wouldn't ever figure out on your own, common in so many action adventure games of the 8-bit era, so that's what this guide is for. ****************************************************************************** -------- 2. Story -------- This game is set immediately after the events of the original Knightmare. After Popolon rescued his beloved wife Aphrodite from the clutches of the evil Hudnos, it turned out to be a trap. While Popolon was away, Galious, the evil high priest, sold his soul to the Devil, and invaded Castle Greek, turning it into a world of evil. He also kidnapped Pampas from the Heavens, who was supposed to be born to Popolon & Aphrodite several years later. (Wait, how is that even remotely possible? But then again, it's a video game, and who cares if it makes sense or doesn't?) It is now up to Popolon & Aphrodite to recapture all 10 Worlds, and rescue their unborn son. ****************************************************************************** -------------- 3. How To Play -------------- ----------------------- 3.1 Popolon & Aphrodite ----------------------- They're the happily married husband & wife you play as. You can switch them anytime you want by pressing the F1 key and making your selection. Popolon wears a blue armor, and Aphrodite wears a pink one. Both players have differences that set them apart; use them to get through certain sections of the game that you have trouble with. Some items can alter some of these disadvantages. There are also some Worlds that Popolon can't enter, and some that Aphrodite can't. (More information on that in Section 4) *Popolon's jump differs in length of time, depending on how long the jump button is pressed; Aphrodite's jumping has a set time. *Popolon can fire two arrow shots; Aphrodite can fire three. *Popolon can set two mines; Aphrodite can set three. *Popolon can destroy rocks after three hits; Aphrodite can do it in fifteen. *Popolon can pass through revolving doors; Aphrodite can't. *Popolon's strength declines rapidly underwater; Aphrodite's strength remains slow. ------------------------- 3.2 Vitality & Experience ------------------------- Your vitality (life force) starts at 32 units. It increases by 32 each time a Great Key is collected. The meter can be increased as many as five times for both heroes, for a maximum of 192. Your experience increases everytime you kill an enemy. Filling the meter will restore your vitality. ------------------------------------ 3.3 Heads Up Display & Option Window ------------------------------------ The Heads Up Display, HUD for short, is displayed on top of the screen. It displays the Vitality & Experience for both heroes in the center. The bottom-left corner shows your current location. On the right is the number of Quivers of arrows, coins, and keys. Also on the right is the secondary weapon currently in use. The Option Window (accessible by pressing the F1 key) displays the heroes on top that can be selected. The middle displays the items collected; 30 slots can be filled up. The bottom-right corner displays your secondary weapons in a window, and just above that are the special items, most of them can be found in the Worlds. The bottom-left corner is the Dungeon Map. The red dot is your current location; the blue dot is where the Great Demon is hiding. ------------ 3.4 Controls ------------ Left & Right Keys = Moves left and right. Also selects character and weapons, as well as makes item selections. Up & Down Keys = Climbs up ladders and jumps. Also switches between characters and weapons selections. A-Z Keys = Use them to type secret spells in the room with the Great Demon. -------------------- 3.5 Saving & Loading -------------------- To save the game, you'll have to go up three screens from the starting point to enter Demeter's Password Shrine. (more information on the Gods and Shrines in Section 5) You'll be asked if you want the secret code to waken her memory and keep the records about you. Say "Yes", and you'll be given a 45-letter password. To load the game, press the L key on the title screen, and type the password you wrote down. You can correct any mistakes you may make by pressing the Left Key, and changing the wrong letters. Press the Return Key. If it is correct, the game will resume where you left off. ****************************************************************************** ------------------ 4. He will resurrect Popolon or Aphrodite only once. He requires 100 ammo, $100, 20 keys, and salt. ****************************************************************************** ------- 6. Tips ------- *You can choose whatever you feel is the best course of action, but I found it best to go around the Castle, collecting all the stuff that you can get until you enter World 1. You also get the Shields in the order that you're supposed to get them in. This walkthrough will demonstrate exactly that. *Try combining it with these other Konami games: **Knightmare: Popolon or Aphrodite can be revived 99 times in Death's shrine. **Q*Bert: Start with full vitality and 100 Arrows, Coins, and Keys. *Stock up on as many keys and arrows as possible when you have enough money. The best place to do so is at Ares' Shrine by warping to World 7. *If your sword makes a sound when you strike a wall, that means there is a secret passage. *Conserve keys as much as you can by looking for ways around locked doors. ****************************************************************************** -------------- 7. Walkthrough -------------- ------------------ 7.1 Before World 1 ------------------ Castle Greek consists of 156 screens.
