Simply put, these kinds of games require trial and error, plenty of restarting, and putting together choice outcomes like a puzzle to find the most optimal route. This guide is intended to both provide hints for the explorers out there, as well as provide a full guide of everything contained in the game. It's highly recommended that you stick with the hints alone the first time you play! The actual guide is more useful for the achievements, and using the guide before you've reached the true ending by yourself will cause you to miss out on a lot of the gameplay and storyline. Part of the fun actually comes from failing, witnessing the crazy things that occur when everything goes wrong, and knowing how to prevent that from happening the next time you play. You should also remember that the game itself has a bookmark feature which will help you solve the gamebook yourself without the need for a guide. Recent versions of the game have several difficulty levels, giving you the option of starting with 10 bookmarks, but disabling the cheat unlockable if you beat the game on those settings. Feel free to use these modes to experiment with routes, then when you have a plan, go for it in classic mode! Now, some important notes about the guide itself! I'll be using these abbreviations throughout the rest of the FAQ: VIT = Vitality OFF = Offense DEF = Defence Bad End = A bad ending where the plot is not resolved True End = Winning the game and getting the best ending Page numbers will not be listed (as they have no tangible use in a digital gamebook), and instead, I'll title each 'room' with a vague description, which will look something like this: EGG SHAPED ROOM: Find a pony. Ride the pony: Perform a fitness check. Success: Get 'A Pony', Go to FLOWERY MEADOWS. Fail: -2 VIT, Go to LESS INTERESTING ROOM. Ignore the pony: Go to LESS INTERESTING ROOM. If there is an enemy to fight, their statistics will be listed in brackets after their name, in the same order as the game shows them. FLOWERY MEADOWS: Fight Bees (3/2/1) Win: Go to LESS INTERESTING ROOM. This would mean that the enemy 'Bees' have 3 VIT, 2 OFF, and 1 DEF. There's no 'Lose:' paths listed for enemies, because losing to an enemy will always lead to a description of how the enemy beat you followed by a Bad End. I'm sure you'll get the hang of things! --- #2# [General Hints (Spoiler-Free)] --- Take Notes ---------- You want to know the reason why I decided to put together a guide for a gamebook? It's because this game gave me an excuse to sit down with gel pens and notepads and jot down all the outcomes, and by the end of the game, I had mapped out so many alternate paths that I knew the entire game by memory! You should try it too! Even if you don't have any real notepads handy, just fire up your computer equivalent and type things to help you remember what happens when you choose certain options. You only need to note down 'Go North = +3 gold, Go to Puffin Enclosure' once, and then when you reach that point next time, you'll know exactly where you've been, what items you'll get, and what new things to try. Dice Nudging ------------ When rolling dice, you can either tap or 'shake' to roll. If you see results you don't want, give your iDevice a quick shake, and you should be able to get a free re-roll! You can only 're-roll' once in most cases though, so it's not a guaranteed cheat, but it certainly gives you a higher chance. Personally speaking, I tend to play on an iPad on my desk with dice roll animations turned off for speed, so nudging isn't really convenient for me... but hey, it's certainly something that might help you! Achievement/Art Tips -------------------- All of the achievements in the game are pretty self-explanatory, but if you can't figure out how to reach a particular location/character, just try different routes or, failing that, look up the name of the location or character in the full path guide after you've beaten the game at least once. The only vague art description is for the 'Nurrothian Mercs', who can be found in one of the taverns in Orlandes. Fitness Tips ------------ When you're first playing the game, and enjoying the storyline and curiosities, rolling a low fitness score can still be fun to play with. Failing fitness checks can often lead to new routes and puzzle opportunities which can easily be missed if you're playing with a very high fitness score (such as Novice mode). A low fitness can lead to a lot of enjoyable side-quests to experiment with! However! If you've played the game long enough to know exactly how to get to the true ending in the best possible way, there is absolutely no reason to play with a fitness of anything lower than 12 (the maximum). If you just need to hit the ending, keep re-rolling a character until you get that maximum fitness! At the very end of the game, the weapons and armour can require you to have a high fitness to even use them, and battles will require you to roll fitness just to get the chance to damage enemies. In short, any fitness will do when playing for fun and exploration! However, the best possible fitness is near-necessary to survive reaching the true ending. Always Try Different Routes! ---------------------------- It can be easy for someone new to gamebooks to be misled into sticking to 'bad routes' every time they play, and never trying the other (possibly better) choices. Here's an extra silly hypothetical example!: "You're reading in the study hoping to find some clues, when all of a sudden, a giant ogre casually balancing four nuclear bombs on his head bursts through the door! Do you: A) Hide in the cupboard? Or do you: B) Ready your weapon?" A new player may naturally decide to hide in the cupboard, where it may say: "The ogre passes by without a hassle. Inside the cupboard, you find a really pretty pink cake (+10 VIT), a box of matches, a pair of new shoes (2 DEF), and a secret passage leading to the next area." Awesome! Right? The player clearly made the correct choice there! It would have been stupid to try and attack that ogre, so every time you play the game, you should ALWAYS hide in the cupboard! ...Unfortunately, the truth is, the other option might have actually said: "The ogre notices your weapon and frowns. 'How will you get out of here alive with that pitiful thing? You should take my spare shotgun. Oh, and here's a key I found. I don't know what it's for, but I hear it's for the locked door right at the end of the game.' After taking the shotgun (6 OFF) and key, you bid the ogre farewell and head out the door on the opposite side." Sure, the matches might have come in handy for a single fitness check somewhere later in the game, but they're no match for the key and shotgun. It always pays to experiment with different routes, no matter how counter-intuitive they might seem. --- #3# [FAQs - Solving common problems! (Spoilers)] --- Q: Is there any use in the '2 OFF' and '2 DEF' equipment, considering you start with these stats anyway? A: Unless that item is magical-but-unappraised, then no, there's no tangible use. The only difference it will change is the equipepd item description in your inventory. Q: Where can I find a shield? A: In this first Gamebook Adventures title, there are no shields in the game. It's listed in the inventory screen as the game has been updated to the engine used in later Gamebook Adventure titles. Q: In the Hall of Records, how do I obtain both the victim's name and the assassin's name and whereabouts? A: Simply put, you can't. In all versions up to V2.1, this 'false choice' was left in the game as a red herring to trick players. In future versions, this will reportedly be changed so that you only need either the victim's name, OR the assassin's name and whereabouts, at which point you will be directed to the Lower Storey of the Hall of Records. Q: What is the Silver Statue of Haradornes all about? A: It's part of Orlandes mythology, and plays a part in Gamebook Adventures 2: Siege of the Necromancer'. Haradornes is a protective spirit in the form of a three-headed red dragon, that was once commonly worshipped. It has no use in the game, but adds a little to the lore of Orlandes! Q: What is the Necklace used for? A: Nothing at all! It's another red herring in the game, a cheap marketplace trinket that serves no purpose other than conning tourists out of a couple of gold coins. Personally speaking, I quite like the idea of the main protagonist running around wearing a pretty necklace, but your imagination may vary. Q: Is there any way to avoid the trap in the ravine? A: The ravine is the first point in the game where you're forced to roll a fitness check with no other option, and failing that fitness check will result in a bad end. It's entirely luck-based. --- #4# [Full Path Guide] --- STARTING TAVERN: Drink: -1 Gold, Become 'Drunk', Temporary -4 FIT, Go to THE ATTACKING MAN Ask: Go to THE ATTACKING MAN Leave: Go to THE ATTACKING MAN THE ATTACKING MAN: Observe: Fight Well-Dressed Thug (14/2/1) Win: Go to VICTIM DIES (without the 'Chase' option) Attack: Drunk: -4 VIT, Fight Well-Dressed Thug (14/2/1) Win: Go to VICTIM DIES Not Drunk: Fight Thug (wounded) (12/1/1) Win: Go to VICTIM DIES VICTIM DIES: Chase (if you didn't observe) = Fitness check Success: Learn Eltane's name, and the direction he's heading, Go to STALKING MAN Fail: -2 VIT, Go to STALKING MAN Search: Get 'Stiletto Dagger' (2 OFF), Learn Ronas Fedor's name, +7 gold Take Eagle Ring: Get 'Fedor's Eagle Ring' Wear Eagle Ring: To Keep searching/Leave options Keep searching: Go to GUARD CHASE Leave: Fitness check Success: Go to STALKING MAN Fail: Go to GUARD CHASE Don't Take Eagle Ring: Keep searching: Go to GUARD CHASE Leave: Fitness check Success: Go to STALKING MAN Fail: Go to GUARD CHASE Lodgings: Go to STALKING MAN GUARD CHASE: Right: -2 VIT Fight the Guards: Bad End Pry open the sewer cover: Go to SEWER Left (Alleys): Open doors: Go to WORKSHOP Keep running: Attacked by guards (-6 VIT), Go to GAOL Straight: Sharp Right: -2 VIT, Go to TIMBER YARD Straight: Fitness check Success: Go to STALKING MAN, or if already encountered, Go to LODGINGS Fail: -6 VIT, Go to GAOL TIMBER YARD: Fight guards: Bad End Pry open sewer: Go to SEWER SEWER: Fight Medius the Cannibal (24/2/1) Win: Stay: +5 VIT, +3 Gold, Get 'Sharp Knife' (2 OFF), Go to STALKING MAN Turn back: -6 VIT, To Gaol WORKSHOP: Search: Get 'Hand-Axe' (3 OFF), Get 'Bullseye Lantern' Upstairs: Fight Gromlin Thief 1+2 (10/2/1) (8/2/1) Win: +6 Gold, Get 'Healing Potion', Go to STALKING MAN Leave: Go to STALKING MAN Wait for guards to leave: Go to STALKING MAN GAOL: Lose all belongings, +4 VIT Own Fedor's Ring: Bad End No Signet Ring: Regain items, -3 Gold, Go to STALKING MAN (or if already been to the stalking man, Go to LODGINGS) LODGINGS: +5 VIT (Only +2 VIT if you went to gaol), -3 Gold, Go to STALKING MAN or, if already been, Go to ELTANE/FEDOR SEARCH STALKING MAN: Learn that Kari was captured Evade: Go to LODGINGS Attack: Fight Footpad (14/2/1) Win: Learn Eltane's name, +2 Gold Slept: Go to ELTANE/FEDOR SEARCH Not yet slept: Fitness check Success: Go to LODGINGS Fail: (If already performed guard chase): -6 VIT, Go to GAOL Explain you were attacked: Mention the murder: Fitness check Success: Go to GUARD CHASE Fail: Go to GAOL Otherwise: Go to LODGINGS Run for it: Go to GUARD CHASE ELTANE SEARCH: Hall of Records: -1 Gold Highest Storey: Nothing (Keep searching): Know Fedor, Eltane, and Eltane's Location: ???
