A Genesis beta copy leaked onto the internet eventually, suggesting this iteration of Ninja Gaiden may have been cancelled for a very common reason: mediocrity. The game has no climbing abilities, few traps, and Ryu can only move diagonally, making combat a chore despite the low-difficulty AI. Of course, if this had been released, it would've been seen as a pale imitation of Sega's popular Streets of Rage franchise, so self-competition may have been a factor in the cancellation, too.
