Review by Vyse_skies
Those little bird-like things Sonic saves from the end of level capsules are Flickies. Interesting.
Flicky is a puzzle game and a simple one at that. Flicky originally appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog as an end of level creature Sonic saves when he pops open the capsule. Now Flicky has gotten his own title.
The aim of Flicky is to save the little chicks by collecting them and heading to a doorway to free them from the level. The more chicks you get through the door at the same time, the more points you will earn. Throughout the level there are chicks scattered about numerous platforms. You need to collect them while avoiding enemies- such as cats and lizards- and get them to the doorway in the fastest possible time. Levels are small; go out of the screen and you'll enter the same screen on the opposite side.
Flicky is all about speed, you need to be quick with the buttons because the enemies just follow you around the stage and if they touch you, you lose a life. As you progress, levels become more trickier to pass, they get larger and more labyrinth like and more enemies are included. It is easy to get trapped by pursuing enemies in the later stages and you'll see just how fast your accumulated lives will be stolen from you.
Also included every few levels are bonus games. Bonus games has you catching 20 chicks that come from all kinds of directions in the sky. Each bonus level provides a different patten from which the chicks fall. This is fun and if you manage to collect all the chick you'll get a hefty score bonus.
Flicky looks simple and sounds simple too. The visuals are something that could have been produced on a Master System, but it doesn't matter because they do the job. Just like Bubble Bobble, Flicky looks simple but feels perfect and it is very challenging and fun. As for music, I suppose some of the loopy tracks and annoy a little, but not so much that you'll turn the sound down.
Overall, Flicky plays much better than it should. It's challenging, lengthy, fun and simple to control and understand. Flicky is a title that can be picked up anytime at any age and played even if it is only in short bursts.Flicky is another neat little puzzle game from Sega.
