Why did they add a 7th chaos emerald?

  1. I know that the addition of the seventh chaos emerald allows sonic to go super and all that, but why? they could have kept six and sonic could still go super. ive never gotten a definitive answer so i was wondering if someone possibly knew

  1. In Sonic 1, he collects all the emeralds (which is why Green Hill turns into Emerald Hill), but couldn't find the last one. It was hiding in a different zone, where the rest of them scattered to.
