## Damage Formula Guide by AKFrost

Version: 0.80 | Updated: 03/05/11

Version 0.80

## I. Introduction

In this Guide I will present my current findings for the Damage Formula. I've done random samples of matchups to ensure that they're within 1 of the calculated value. These findings provide a fairly accurate prediction of Damage in the current form.

If this formula is significantly off in certain cases, please let me know in the Damage Formula thread on the GameFAQ boards. Thanks.

This guide starts at Version 0.75 due to the unconfirmed status, the incomplete research on Luck, and lack of hard data for Speed and Hit Rate.

## 1. Formula

Note that Defense here refers to Resistance for Elemental Skills

Damage = (Base Damage - Defense * (Defense Limit) / 99 + Luck Correction) * Ability Multiplier * Elemental Multiplier * Defend Multiplier

### 1a. Base Damage

Base Damage is a value determined by the Strength or Skill Stat, depending on the nature of attack used (physical or elemental).

I have yet to regress a formula for the relation between Base Damage and Strength, though it appears to be a four-part continuous piecewise function. For a value of 1-20, it seems linear. For a value of 21-50, it seems cubic. For a value of 51-70, it seems to be Quadrati with a negative second derivative. For a value of 71-99, it seems to Quadratic with a positive second derivative.

### 1b. Defense Limit

Defense Limit is also a value determined by the Strength or Skill Stat, depending on the nature of attack used (physical or elemental). It affects how big of an effect the defense value can have.

I have yet to regress a formula for the relation between Base Damage and Strength, though it appears to be a four-part piecewise function with a disjoint at 21. For a value of 1-20, it seems linear. For a value of 21-50, it seems cubic. For a value of 51-70, it seems to be Quadratic with a negative second derivative. For a value of 71-99, it seems to be a constant 64.

### 1c. Luck Correction

This is mainly from Vellup's data that I interpreted. Luck Correction seems to be the range between -x and positive x, where x is (Luck Stat - 1) / 20 using integer division.

### 1d. Ability Multiplier

This is the multiplier applied i the attack is an ability (as opposed to a normal attack).

For a single-target, pure damage ability, it seems to be the energy cost * 0.25.

For a single-target, 20 energy move with possibility to terminate, it seems to be 2.25.

The others have yet to be tested.

### 1e. Elemental Multiplier

If using an elemental ability, the bonus/penalty for the right/wrong element is 0.25.

In other words, 1.25 if Fire attacks Water, 0.75 if Water attacks Fire.

The elemental cycle is.

Shadow and Leaf is weak to each other.

Fire > Water > Earth > Sky > Fire. No, I don't know why Fire > Water or why Earth > Sky.

Naroom is Leaf Underneath is Earth Cald is Fire Orothe is Water Arderial is Sky Core is Shadow.

In-game, Sky is sometimes known as wind. Earth could be both Earth and Leaf, depending on the item in question.

### 1f. Defend Multiplier

You can order your creature to defend (by pressing the right button when highlighting attack, if you didn't already know). This will reduce the damage by half.
