This game is a drug. But get it anyway ^_^
Say, remember that great game Puyo Puyo from way back when? No? How about Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine or Kirby's Avalanche?
Well, anyhow, the same puzzle craziness is back with a few new tweaks that actually change the game far more than you'd think.
Puyo Puyo involves connecting blobs of the same color. Connect 4 blobs and they pop, which is probably why in America the game was renamed to Puyo Pop... or something like that... Anyhow, blobs don't have to be in a straight line, they're more "liquid"... you can make zig-zags of blobs, and they'll still pop. It allows for a lot of strategy and forces you to think harder to make connections.
The main point of Puyo Puyo is to make chain reactions of exploding blobs, so that Garbage Puyo will fall onto your opponent's screen, and will hopefully eventually take them down.
Fever mode is the new addition to the game, along with 3-Puyo and 4-Puyo blocks... I call Fever the "endless puzzle" because you get a ready-made big chain to smack your opponent with, and when you clear any part of that, you get another one. It's one of the most effective ways to kill off your opponent, but of course they can do the same to you.
With the addition of Fever Mode, the pace got a lot more frantic. Garbage Puyo are thrown left and right in a crazy brain-melting scramble that's a lot more fun than I probably make it sound like ^_^
The graphics are functional enough, although backgrounds make transparent Garbage Puyo sometimes look like they've got color, which can be annoying at times.
As for sound... the English dub sucks, but the original voices are there too so no big deal. The music is surprisingly catchy, especially the Fever music.
The controls are very solid, so you have nobody to blame but yourself if you lose ^_^
Absolutely brilliant and super-addictive game, I consider Puyo Puyo to be one of the greatest puzzlers around and the formula has only gotten better.
This game = win. Buy it now, you won't regret it ^_^
Numbers for the mathematically inclined:
I know that averages to 9.4, but the fun is most important, don't you think?
Rating: 5.0 - Flawless
