Phantasy Star Online was originally only intended to run for 2-3 months, according to producer Takao Miyoshi. However, the game saw enormous success in Japan, which led to its continued support for several years, and eventual expanded ports on the PC, Gamecube, and Xbox.
Connection to Other Media
The game contains several weapons that were taken from other Sega franchises. These include the Samba Maracas (taken from Samba de Amigo) and the Sonic Knuckle (taken from Knuckles of the Sonic franchise)
The Halloween mag cells obtained from a Jack 'O Lantern include many references to older Sega titles and allow you to turn your Mag into characters from games gone by. Those Mag Cells are:
Heart of Opa Opa (reference to Fantasy Zone)
Heart of Chu Chu and Heart of Kapu Kapu (reference to the Chu Chu Rocket series)
Heart of Chao (reference to Sonic Adventure)
Heart of Robochao (reference to Sonic Adventure 2)
Heart of Pian (reference to NiGHTS into Dreams)
In addition, the Mag cells contained in the Christmas Presents allow the player to transform their mags into each of Sega's home consoles - the Mark 3, Master System, Genesis, Sega Saturn, and Dreamcast.
A Chao from Sonic Adventure can be spotted in the game by returning to Ragol after completeing the "The Fake in Yellow" quest, then returning to Ragol and staring at the waterfall where the Rappies are gathered. As an added shout-out to another Sega title, the "Vamos de Carnival" music from Samba di Amigo plays after the Chao appears.
