What is Stat Experience?

If you've played more recent Pokémon games, especially competitively, you're already familiar with a modernized, more streamlined version of Stat Exp. - Effort Values, or EVs. Stat Exp. is their predecessor, used in Generations I & II of the Pokémon games (Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, Gold, Silver, and Crystal).

Stat Exp. is a means of augmenting stats, and is one of two ways that the stats for trained Pokémon in these generations differ from regular Pokémon. They are also a completely hidden statistic; unless you keep track of it yourself, you'll never know the Stat Exp. for a Pokémon. Stat Exp. always starts at zero for a Pokémon that is caught in the wild, received in an NPC trade (not player-player trades), or in the case of Generation II also just hatched from an Egg.

How is Stat Exp. earned? In Generations I and II, there are two means of doing so - defeating a Pokémon in battle will grant you Stat Exp. in your stats based on the Pokémon's species, as will having your Pokémon ingest Vitamins (up to a certain point). The former seems to be the result of an error according to some, wherein the Stat Exp. is taken from the defeated Pokémon's base stats (as opposed to separate variables like in Generations III onward), which marks why the gains are uneven and staggered in practice more than in theory. Luckily, there is a means of preventing that.

Pokérus (Pokémon Virus): The Pokémon Virus, shortened most often to Pokérus or PKRS, is a factor introduced in Generation II. Pokémon have a very low chance of obtaining it from battling an affected Pokémon, 3 in 65,536 to be precise. Once a Pokémon catches the Pokémon Virus, they can spread it: for 48 hours when the Pokémon is in the active party, other party members have a chance to be infected with it after battle. Once infected, and even after the 48-hour timeframe expires (the 48 hours is only the period when the virus can spread to other Pokémon), all Stat Exp. gained from battles will be doubled. This makes it much easier to grind up Stat Exp. (since it can take around 600 battles to max out a stat in Generations I & II).

What does Stat Exp. do? As I stated previously, Stat Exp. serves to boost stats. Specifically, the formula is as follows:

   Change in Stat = floor{ min{ ceiling[ sqrt(Stat Exp.) ], 255} * Level / 400 }

Or in less technical terms: "The square root of the Stat Exp., multiplied by your Level divided by 400, with all divisions having their decimal parts removed. If the square root results in a decimal, it rounds up, unless this makes the root exceed 255, in which case it is limited to 255." The gains are accordingly parabolic, and not as even as the "every 4 EVs in a stat results in a gain by Level 100." In this case, a one-point gain by Level 100 happens at 16 Stat Exp., a two-point gain at 64 Stat Exp., and so on.

Stat Exp. caps at a certain value for a stat - 65,535 to be exact - but unlike the Effort Value system all of your stats can be at this max value, there is no overarching maximum value for your six stats. Obviously, this also means the best way to improve your Stat Exp. stats is just to grind against the Elite Four in either Generations I or II.

What does this guide cover? There are several sections in this guide.

  • Vitamins: These covers the vitamins in the game, stats affected, and the degree to which they're affected. These differ a little between Generation I and Generation II, and the sections differ accordingly.

  • Pokémon Stat Exp. Yields: This section lists the Stat Exp. you'll get from any Pokémon you defeat. Due to the different statistics, Pokémon, and the introduction of Pokérus, there are two sections for this too - one for Generation I and another for Generation II.

  • Stat Exp. VS EV: This is merely a section to satisfy the occasional bit of curiosity, and details the overall difference between the Stat Exp. and EV systems, and how efficient they are.

Vitamin Stat Exp. Yields (Generation I)

Vitamins can be bought from the Dept. Store in Celadon City. Vitamins will grant the specified amount of Stat Exp. to a stat, but if the Stat Exp. for the stat exceeds 25,600 then the Vitamin will not be consumed and it will not work.
