One of the best games the classic Game Boy has to offer.
Super Mario Land, which is now an ancient classic, began a series of great games which grew considerably different (such as Wario Land II) from its origin. It's hard to imagine that the modern games in the series came from the first, but it is somehow true. The second entrant of the series, Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, truly begat the Wario Lands that we see today.
Gameplay - 9/10
In this Super Mario Land adventure, you'll have to begin by completing an introductory level displaying the types of challenges that'll face you in the future. You'll encounter traditional goombas, koopa troopas, power ups, coins, blocks, etc. on your journey toward the exit. This time, there's another power up to go along with the fireball form; you'll come across carrots that'll give Mario rabbit ears, and he'll be able to gradually float to the bottom of a level by flapping them after he leaps off a high area. After you complete level one, you'll be able to tackle one of six zones, each containing roughly 3-5 levels, and a variety of enemies and terrain. At the end of each level, you'll come across a crane game where you may receive a mushroom, a fire flower, a carrot, a 1-up, or a 3-up. Timing is everything. At the end of each zone, you'll beat up a boss and receive a gold coin. Once all six are gathered, you'll be able to open up a castle which once belonged to Mario, but was taken over by his evil cousin, Wario. Wario is a big meanie and has a tough castle, so be sure to stock up on lives at the gambling hill in front of the castle. Each game will cost you a certain amount of coins, and the challenges that'll take more money out of your wallet contain better probabilities and bonuses. If you don't want to bother, you may select ''Easy Mode'' during the pipe (save) selection screen by pressing the select button. While not perfect, and somewhat short, Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins is very entertaining.
Graphics - 10/10
Dramatically improved from the elderly original, Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins contains top-notch graphics for its point in time. Cutesy but fitting, each zone's graphics are individual and fun to look at. Tons of obstacles and enemies appear along the way, and Wario looks evil and moronic, as he should. An A+ goes out to Nintendo, here.
Sound - 10/10
One of the higher points of the game, each zone has witty and fitting music that is worthy of being labeled under the Nintendo license. You won't hear the same track over and over again; each zone you hike off to has at least one or two tracks of its own. Woo hoo!
Replay - 7/10
There's a few secret levels worth taking a try at, but there isn't too much of a reason to come back. Of course, this game wasn't released last week, so it had enough for its time.
How many $$$ is it worthy of, master?
This game can already be found in many homes of Game Boy owners, and has a normal mode and an easy mode, so gamers new and old should enjoy themselves. If you're looking for a cutesy platformer that allows you to beat up Wario, and have fifteen or sixteen bucks, take a look.
