The name doesn't make the game: Part 2

Super Mario Land 2 is a Platform game developed by Nintendo. Super Mario Land made some bucks, well not some to say the truth it sold very well. Why? Because it’s a Mario game damn it!!! That was it, it was a Mario game so it sold like hell. Was it good? No it wasn’t. Is this game good? It is better… but not good…

Mario must face Wario in this game, because he has used some kind of magic and turned the world upside down. You must gather some sort of coins from each playable world and then enter his castle and beat the living pooh out of him!

Replay Value: 0/10

This game is nothing more than a good ol’ Mario platform game. Run, jump, stomp on enemies and collect power-ups. Your purpose is to traverse through six different worlds, (you can select which one you want to play), and after clearing level after level you beat a boss and get a Coin, gather six of them and you can enter the Mario Land castle where Wario is hiding. The problem: absolutely no innovation! The power-ups are the common mushrooms and flowers and stars with the exception of the carrot with which you can glide over the level, the problem is that even this thing doesn’t make the game any fun, not to mention that it makes an already easy game easier since you can complete most of the levels just by flying over everything. How easy you say? Simply one of the easiest Mario games in existence, wait to see the bosses, they are ridiculous. The game is also very small, VERY small, you buy the game one day, you start playing it the other and in the third day the game is either in your forgotten cartridge box or if you’re lucky it is sold to another friend of yours at half price. Finally there is no use in playing a level again, something that completely destroys the replay value. You’ve finished the game? It’s over no point playing it again, no added challenge, no special items you must find, no percentage of completion for each level, no nothing…

Graphics: 7.8/10
Design: 7.6/10

A truly good-looking game for our humble GB and a very huge step forward from the below average graphics of Super Mario Land. Mario looks like Mario and not like a tiny bunch of pixels that runs and jumps. Generally everything has the right size and design. Levels like in the first SML, have nothing to do with the Mario Bros series, no mushroom kingdom here folks, but the levels that are here are quite good! Starting from the typical… err grassland or something and then travel through the inside of a whale, inside a giant Mario robot, fly, (literally), in space and many more all looking good and with good backgrounds too, something rare in GB games.

Sound: 6.8/10
Music: 6/10

The sound effects are very nice and sound like they should, very… Mario-ish. The music on the other hand disappointed me a bit, not that it was bad, but Mario games simply need great catchy tunes and not just a bunch of mediocre themes… anyway that’s nitpicking the game sounds good.

While an ok game, it just isn’t so good as a Mario game should be. Its biggest problem is the fact that it is just a platform game, nothing new, no innovation, not a thing that could make it stand out besides its famous name.
