Great puzzler that will last you a long time
Are you the kind of person that likes the game that no one has ever heard about? Then this is the game for you! Developed by Nintendo 2nd party R&D1 and produced by the game god Shigeru Miyamoto, this classic was overlooked stateside, when it was released in 1995. Thankfully, you now know about it!
I LOVE the graphics of this game. They are very simple, but at the same time, they possess a great, unique style. Muddy and the enemies are very well animated, and the background graphics are all original and cartoony and easy on the eyes. The cutscenes are also very well done, and look almost snes quality.
I'm not a big fan of Gameboy music, and usually turn the sound off, but this game has a pretty good theme song. I don't believe there's more than one song while you're playing, but it's a decent little tune, better than average. The game itself doesn't feature many sounds, other than when muddy gets hit, which is a cute noise.
Mole Mania really shines in the gameplay department. There is tons of variety to the different levels. There are about 4 different types of enemies, and many types of puzzle elements. Some of the funner ones include pipe tubes and barrels. You also get to take advantage of not only the main level, but also an underground level, where you can burrow to safety. At the end of each level is a main boss. Most of them aren't very difficult once you figure them out, but require a special way to defeat them. Each time you defeat a boss, you receive one of your babies that has been kidnapped by the evil Jinbe. There are also bonus levels that have you going up against Jinbe, trying to put cabbages into the game. These bonus levels get very frustrating, and are almost a test of luck, but you will feel relieved once you have beaten them.
This game will last you at least a month. The later levels are very challenging and will bend your mind for days until you finally beat them. When do you complete a level that seemed impossible, you get that great sense of accomplishment :) Plus, you can work towards getting 100% on each level, which can take some time. Mole Mania features battery backup, so your game is automatically saved. Two save slots are available, so you and a friend can both save your seperate progress. Overall, a great purchase!
