It's Tetris with bombs, but much better than Tetris 2!
Tetris Attack is yet another Tetris spinoff. However, it ain't half bad.
They're pretty similar to the graphics on most Tetris games, but the tetrads do look slightly more detailed. The enemies used in the verses mode are pretty cool looking, although pretty simplistic.
The sound effects in this game are pretty cool. The explosion sound is great for the Game Boy, and the stacking/flip Tetrad noises are good enough, and somewhat realistic. The music in this game isn't Russian at all, but it is pretty catchy for the most part. There are 3 different tunes to listen to.
This game is quite addictive. There are 3 different modes of play:
Contest: The game creates a bunch of different puzzles you must blast your way through. The number of points you recieve is accumulated by how many tetrads you needed to use. the less the better.
Training: Similar to the normal Tetris, you just have an empty screen and you play for as long as you can. However, I don't think the speed goes past 9.
Fight: There is a little enemy on the screen that you must kill by blasting him with bombs or by toppling him with tetrads. Sounds easy, but each monster can fight back, and they can dissolve your unlit bombs for health. They can also turn into a drill sometimes if they need to open a path for themselves, as well as create a few more rows, which will make you closer to the top of the screen.
In this game, you must have a bomb when you make a row in order for any destruction to happen. If you make a row without a bomb, nothing will happen. The more rows you make at a time, the bigger the explosion from each bomb inside the rows. if you make a square-type shape by using 4 bombs, they will create one large bomb which can be quite helpful.
This game is actually easier than it sounds, but it does take some practice until you get the hang of it. The game never gets to frustrating though.
The replay value is pretty good, but not as good as Tetris since the speed only goes up to 9 in training if I'm correct, and unlike Tetris, both Contest and Fight mode have an ending.
Nice spin on the idea of Tetris!
Rating: 4.5 - Outstanding
