    From somewhere far away, Junpei could hear the sound of metal squeaking.

    He felt his stomach tighten. There were a thousand things the sound could
    have been, but none of the things he could think of were good. In an
    attempt to distract himself, Junpei looked around the room once more.

    Set in the wall directly in front of him was a slightly dirty iron door.

    The first thing Junpei noticed about the door was the number roughly
    emblazoned across it.

I.  I N T R O D U C T I O N ............................................*INTRO

This walkthrough is for the demo of 999. It is only available online and is
playable on a virtual DS. Go to: http://www.aksysgames.com/999/pages/demo.

Please note that this FAQ does not cover the actual game, which has not yet
been released in English, (although in fact this is the very first puzzle of
the Japanese release).

II.  G A M E  I N F O R M A T I O N  ................................... *INFO

1. Game Structure
According to the Official Website the game consists of three parts:

* Escape
The demo consists of an "Escape" scenario.

Escape scenarios: examine surroundings to find hints and items to help you
escape from a room or set of rooms.

* Minigames
There is a minigame in the demo.

Minigames: solve a puzzle or complete a game to escape. This might involve
combining items or using a calculator to arrive at a solution.

* Novel
There is also a story aspect to the game which the demo introduces.

Novel: read the narrative, including dialogue, to progress the story and gather
information to inform choices.

2. Characters
In an interview with Kotaro Uchikoshi, the director of the game, he explained
that since the number 9 plays a vital role in the storyline, he set the
characters using the concept of "Enneagrams" as a base. According to the
Enneagram of Personalities, mankind can be classified into the following 9
groups and the characters from the game represent these groups.

1-The Reformer
2-The Helper
3-The Achiever
4-The Individualist
5-The Investigator
6-The Loyalist
7-The Enthusiast
8-The Challenger
9-The Peacemaker

Of these nine characters, only one of them (Junpei), features in the demo.

1. Ace
A tall, grave older man with a streak of gray in his hair, he is often the
voice of calm reason when events descend into chaos.

2. Snake
A young man with a princely demeanor, he is an unending fount of information,
but tends to only reveal it when there is no other option.

3. Santa
Little more than a punk with silver hair and a bad attitude at first glance,
this clever guy keeps pushing forward and doesn't like dealing with

4. Clover
Prone to rapid swings of emotion, this pink haired girl doesn't hesitate to
speak her mind or put people in their place.

5. Junpei
After this college kid wakes up to find he's been transported to a strange
location, he takes it upon himself to figure out all the cryptic clues and to
save everyone trapped with him.

6. Clover
A delicate girl with a connection to Junpei, she's always helpful and works
hard to make sure no one gets left behind.

7. Seven
A large, bumbling mountain of a man, his appearance and behavior hide an
intelligent mind well-equipped for solving problems.

8. Lotus
A self-serving, barely-dressed woman with unknown skills and knowledge, she
does whatever she can to find her way out.

9. 9th Man
A fidgety, jumpy man from the start, he knows more than he's letting on.

III.  W  A  L  K  T  H  R  O  U  G  H  ................................. *WALK

* You are free to search the room in any order you like, but this sequence is
  the most efficient way through.

1. Introduction
Load the demo from the website and watch the introduction on the top screen of
the virtual DS. (You can skip it using the command on the bottom screen.) Then,
press START.

Watch a short scene and click through some dialogue using your mouse on the
bottom screen. You're introduced to Junpei (who is 21) and Akane, an old school
friend, and then given a quick tour of the room. After the scenes are finished
your task is to find a way to unlock the door and escape from the room.

*Searching during an escape*
Touch the bottom screen to move. Areas you can investigate turn yellow when
touched. Touching some areas (on the bottom screen) will reveal an item or some
hints. Touching some areas has no reaction so you know there is nothing of
interest to find.

*Triangle Icon*
Click on the triangle at the right, left or bottom of the screen to change the
viewing angle. If you are close up to something you can touch the bottom
triangle to move away.

*Bird's Eye View*
To see where you are, touch the X on the camera icon and that will show you
which direction you're facing. Your position appears as a blue icon on an
overhead map of the room that appears on the top screen

*File Screen*
Any notes or documents you find will show up here. To open the file screen
touch *File* R on the bottom screen. When at the file screen simply touch a
file to select one, or press the directional button.

Touch "Search" R to display a file on the top screen.

After reading all these instructions you'll be ready to move and can use the
icons on the lower screen as instructed. Click "FILE" and there are 4 files of
instructions. Click *Search* to read each one.

L Back (at the top left corner of the screen) returns to the main screen.

2. Searching the Basin
ITEMS: Picture Frame
       Note from Bulletin Board

You are facing a screen showing a washbasin and the porthole with water gushing
through. Check the basin and you'll get a close up of it. Touch the small
rectangle on the shelf (you'll get more instructions about items) and touch it
again to obtain [PICTURE FRAME]. You'll get a close up view of this item and
touch Search to receive more information about it. The back is held with some
screws and you're going to need something to remove these.

There's nothing in the basin or on the towel at the right of it, but touch the
board above the shelf to obtain [NOTE FROM BULLETIN BOARD]. Search this to
discover more about it: there are four symbols, two in blue and two in red, but
it won't mean much just yet.

Return to the main screen and click the bottom triangle to back away from the
basin. You should be back at the starting position now. You can go right or
left, but click right to see a view of a bunk and a stove.

3. Searching the Stove
ITEMS: Small Key (Blue)
USE  : Screwdriver with Picture Frame (Combine)
GET  : Picture

Touch the pot on top of the stove to get a close up. Touch it again and touch
the lid to open it and retrieve a [SMALL KEY (BLUE)]. Search the key to be told
that it's blue and that maybe it's to be used for something blue. Go back
(Press the L on the Back button) and then press the bottom triangle so you can
view the stove.

Touch the door of the stove and it opens. Inside you'll find a [SCREWDRIVER].
On the close up of the Screwdriver, touch the COMBINE Command and then both the
screwdriver and the picture frame and you'll receive the [PICTURE] that was
inside the frame. Touch it to turn it around and you'll see various symbols on
the back. Search these for more information about them, and you'll see that
they give numerical values to the symbols on the Note from the Bulletin Board.
(You'll get more instructions on combining items.) You'll notice that items you
no longer need, or have used for a specific purpose, will disappear, and the
screwdriver and frame are no longer in your item inventory.

Go back to the main view and touch the right triangle so you're facing the

4. Searching the "Empty" Bunks
ITEMS: Memo from Bed

Turn so you're facing the exit door and search the bunks to the right. Touch
the lowest one and then touch the pillow to move it out the way and this
reveals [MEMO FROM BED]. This is similar to the Note from the Bulletin Board.
There is nothing on the middle bunk and you cannot reach the top bunk.

5. Searching the Mirror
ITEMS: Small Key (Red)

While facing the exit door with the bunks at either side of you, touch the area
between the left bunk and the door with the red 5 on it. This gets you close to
a grey looking door. Touch it and it opens to reveal a mirror. Touch the
reflection and you obtain the [SMALL KEY (RED)]

6. Searching the Bunks and Opening the Blue Briefcase
ITEMS: Blue Briefcase
USE  : Small Key (Blue)
       Note from Bulletin Board
       Memo from Bed
GET  : File (Digital Root), Stack of Blue Keycards.

There's nothing to find on the middle bunk, but the lower one has a [BLUE
BRIEFCASE], and now you have everything you need to open it.

You'll see an item at the lower left corner of the bottom screen. Touch it to
scroll through all the items in your possession until you get to the blue key.
Touch the lock and the blue key will automatically go inside it. Touch one of
the numbers on the briefcase and you'll see instructions telling you to enter
four numbers and then touch the key.

You need both the memo, the note and the picture to be able to work out the
code. (Go back to the item menu screen to find out if you don't already know
the code.) Look at the back of the picture and use the codes to match with the
symbols on the two memos. Start with the Memo from the bed and then the Note
from bulletin board, and you only need the shapes with a blue outline or solid
blue colour.

Open the case by touching it again (after getting the message that it's
unlocked) and touch the red [FILE]. Now you'll get an explanation about how to
find the digital root of a series of numbers. It's not complicated!

Add all numbers in a sequence together and if you get a number with more than
one digit, add those digits together. Keep adding digits until you have just
one number. Akane gives you an example: to find the digital root of 678 add 6,
7, and 8 which equals 21. Add 2 + 1 and the digital root is 3. (This
information is added to the File Menu so you can read it again.)

You will also find something else on the file: a [STACK OF BLUE KEYCARDS].
(You can see where this is going...).

7. Searching the Closet and Opening the Red Briefcase
ITEMS: Red Briefcase
USE  : Small Key (Red)
       Note from Bulletin Board
       Memo from Bed
GET  : Stack of Red Keycards.

Starting from the bunks with the blue briefcase, touch the white folding door
to the left of the stove.

When you're close to the white folding doors touch them again to open the
cupboard. Inside is a shelf with a [RED BRIEFCASE]. When you touch it again
you'll see that it is locked and that it has a combination dial with four
numbers that must be used. The rest of the closet has nothing of interest.
Do the same thing as for the blue briefcase and bring up the the red key on the
screen and the touch the lock to place it in the lock. Use the codes to
discover the red numbers. Start with the Note from the bulletin board to get
the first two numbers and then the Memo for the second two. Open the briefcase
and you'll find a [STACK OF RED KEYCARDS].

9. Opening the Door
USE  : Stack of Red Keycards
       Stack of Blue Keycards

Touch the device at the right side of the exit door and touch it again to get
some more information. You'll automatically attempt to use the keycards but
this doesn't work. Use both sets of keycards on the device and then Akane will
come up with the solution. There's something about the [5] written on the door
and the instructions about how to find the digital root. Now you'll get more
instructions on screen. Touch 3 of the cards and the top screen will show the
digital root of the cards you select. You'll see the six cards on the bottom
screen and all you need to do is choose three that will give you the digital
root of 5. In other words, you need to pick three numbers that add up to 14.
(You can place them in any order.) Then, touch the device and it will switch
on, unlocking the door.

The cards are: RED : 1, 2, 3
               BLUE: 6, 7, 8

Choose 7 + 1 + 6

10. End of Demo
Touch the triangle at the bottom of the screen to back away from the switch,
and you're facing the door. Touch it to end the demo.
