Professor Layton and the Last Specter (released in Europe as "Professor Layton 
and the Specter's Call" and in Japan as "Professor Layton and the Specter's 
Flute") is the fourth Professor Layton game released, but is the first 
chronologically in the series. The game is a prequel to the series, and is part 
of a new trilogy of Professor Layton games. Also included in the U.S. and 
Australian versions of this game is the RPG titled London Life, in which the 
player moves to London and assumes a variety of jobs in order to gain money 
that can be used to purchase clothes, food, furniture, and other items, as well 
as interacting with citizens of the town (who just so happen to be characters 
from all current Professor Layton games). Since Layton's Life is technically a 
separate game, this walkthrough will not cover it.

                             Main Characters (MCHR)

Professor Herschel Layton became an archaeology professor at the fictional 
Gressenheller University in London at the ripe old age of 27, and is also an 
avid puzzle enthusiast. "The Last Specter" takes place when Professor Layton is 
34 years old.

Emmy Altava is hired by Dean Delmona at Gressenheller University to be 
Professor Layton's assistant. She is very intuitive, dedicated, and 
intelligent, as shown early in the game by her research skills, as well as 
athletically competent. She and the professor have met before, but he does not 
seem to recall the event...

Clark Triton is an old friend of Professor Layton who now serves as the mayor 
of Misthallery, which will be the main location for the game.

Luke Triton, son of Clark Triton, is well-known to players of previous games in 
this series; he is Professor Layton's apprentice in the other games of the 
series. "The Last Specter," however, will show how the professor and Luke first 
met. Luke is able to talk to animals and predicts when and where the specter 
will strike.

                                Gameplay (GMPL)

From the main menu, you can select to start a new game, continue a previous 
game, view bonuses, or play London Life. 

The Bonuses include Weekly Puzzles, Puzzle Index, Layton's Challenges, and Top 
Secret, and are discussed in fuller detail after the Walkthrough portion of 
this guide.

The touchscreen is used for controlling everything in the main game; the D-pad, 
control pad, and L/R buttons are only used in the bonus RPG London Life. The 
main aspect of this game (and the rest of the series) involves solving puzzles 
using the Nintendo DS touchscreen, navigating areas, and interacting with 
people to learn information.

During the game, the top screen of the Nintendo DS shows the map of the area; 
the Layton icon represents current location and the orange arrow or "here" sign 
represents the targeted destination. The bottom screen is the current area. 
Tapping the shoe in the lower right corner (which can be moved by touching and 
dragging) brings up navigational arrows; tapping these moves the player. 

The trunk in the upper right corner (which can be moved as well) brings up a 
menu with several options; the top row includes "Layton's Journal" (Professor 
Layton's notes on the story thus far), "Mysteries" (as with all of the Layton 
games, there are ten mysteries that will be encountered and solved throughout 
the game), "Puzzle Index" (list of all encountered puzzles), and the save menu. 
The bottom row includes "Episodes" (bonus conversations or cutscenes), the Toy 
Train and Fish minigames (which are unlocked after certain events in the main 
game and consist of ten tracks/levels apiece), and the Puppet Theater minigame 
(which is unlocked after a certain event and consists of three storybooks that 
the player must complete using puppet actions acquired throughout the game). 
Completing the Toy Train, Fish, and Puppet Theater will unlock special puzzles 
in the Bonuses section.

Every puzzle that is encountered is worth a set number of Picarats. Harder 
puzzles are worth more Picarats than an easier puzzle. However, answering a 
puzzle incorrectly will decrease the number of Picarats received, which is why 
I recommend saving as often as possible and, if in doubt, to quit a puzzle, 
save, and then attempt it. Certain features in the Bonuses section are unlocked 
only after earning a set number of Picarats.

In order to be as spoiler-free as possible, I will NOT discuss the cutscenes or 
conversations throughout the game unless absolutely necessary. I WILL give 
location and solutions for all of the puzzles, locations of all hint coins and 
hidden items, and solutions for the three minigames.

Upon selecting to start a new game, several cutscenes will play, followed by 
the first puzzle.

Puzzle No. 001 - A Secret Message - 10 Picarats

The letter from Clark Triton to Professor Layton appears to have a seven-letter 
hidden message in it, which can be inputted using the keyboard on the bottom 
screen. This puzzle is relatively easy.

Hint: Try looking at the first letters in each line of the letter. Also, notice 
that some letters can be used more than once.

Answer: HELPSOS.

Solving this puzzle will lead to another cutscene, and two mysteries will be 
added to the "Mysteries" screen, which can be accessed by tapping the trunk 
icon in the upper right corner: "Letter" and "Golden Garden."

                   Chapter 1 - The Fog of Misthallery (CHP1)

  Bridge to Town

After the brief cutscene, you will be told to "tap an area to investigate." 
Using the stylus, tap various areas of interests to interact with the 
environment. Tapping on something insignificant will result in brief comments 
by the characters; an area of importance will result in white dash marks, 
typically followed by a conversation; puzzles will be accompanied by a large 
red exclamation mark; and finally, "hidden" items (puzzles, hint coins, and 
treasures), are designated by puffs of dust that must be tapped repeatedly.

Tapping the bridge will result in a short conversation between the professor 
and Emmy, followed by the appearance of Aldus, a citizen of Misthallery. Tap 
him to talk, and follow his instructions to find the first hint coin. 

Hint coins are used when you need a little hint to help solve a puzzle; every 
puzzle has three regular hints (which cost one hint coin apiece) and a 
superhint (which costs 2 hint coins). There are 300 hint coins hidden 
throughout the game. Most areas have three hint coins, with the exception of 
one area with two. You start out with ten hint coins.

After viewing the brief explanation on the trunk, tap the boy (Charlie) for a 
short conversation followed by the second puzzle.

Puzzle No. 002 - Tourist Spotting - 20 Picarats

Four pictures are shown, all taken at the same location. One of them, however, 
was taken on a different day. Which pictures were taken on the same day?

Hint: Don't focus on animals or clothing; remember to pick the three that are 
from the same day, NOT the oddball.

Solution: A, B, and D is the correct answer; if you look at the shadows, you 
can see that these pictures have similarly positioned shadows, while picture C 
does not; his picture was taken during on a different day, at a different time.

After solving Puzzle 002, a police officer will appear; tap him for a short 
conversation, then collect the hint coins and proceed to the next area.

  Twin Bridges

Tapping the bridge with ropes will result in a "Solve the Puzzle" activity; 
these are different from regular puzzles, in that they do not have a number, do 
not result in Picarats, and there is no punishment for answering incorrectly. 
However, they must be solved in order to proceed.

Solve the Puzzle - The Rope Bridge

The bridge is blocked by ropes; however, cutting in just on spot will allow you 
to proceed. Follow each rope's path to find the one holding the others in 
place.

Solution: Cut the top rope on the left side.

After cutting the rope, a brief conversation will take place; afterwards, a 
small mouse will run across the bridge. When you see mice running across the 
screen, tap them; you will receive a "mouse badge." A minigame will be unlocked 
in the Crossroads area of town after you collect ten of these.

for a short conversation.

Puzzle No. 003 - Pick a Package - 20 Picarats

There is a stack of packages shown; you are instructed to remove a specific 
package, but the instructions are a bit smudged.

Hint: Use the information available to determine which package fits all of the 
requirements; there is only one.

Solution: The box in the third row from the top, in the third column from the 
left; it is the only box that fits all of the criteria.

Puzzle No. 004 - Reloading the Cart - 30 Picarats

After hitting a bump in the road, Jasmine's cart has spilled, and you must help 
her reload it. All of the items must fit inside the box, with no empty spaces.

Hint: The pieces can be rotated; 

Solution: Put the upper left piece (looks like a staircase) in the very bottom 
right corner. Take the piece on the bottom right side of the screen and place 
it in the bottom left corner. Put the upper right piece in between the two 
pieces already place. Take the piece on the left side, rotate it right once, 
and place it in the upper left corner. Take the last piece, rotate it twice in 
either direction, and place it in the only available space. The completed 
puzzle will look something like this:

cannot pass until you have solved 5 puzzles, which we have not. Tap the shoe 
icon and go left.

Tap the man (Bucky) for a short conversation and a puzzle.

Puzzle No. 005 - River Crossing - 25 Picarats

You must transport one dog, two cats, and three chicks across a river, using a 
platform that can only hold two animals. However, you cannot leave the dog with 
only one cat and you cannot leave more cats than chicks.

Hint: Remember that you do not have to take two animals every time, and that 
you can drop off one while keeping another.

Solution: Take both cats across. Return to the other side and get the dog and a 
chick and take them across. Pick up both cats and return to the other side. Get 
two chicks and take them across. Return to the other side, get the two cats, 
and take them across.

You will see Bucky in many locations throughout the game; always tap him when 
you see him in a new area to unlock that area as a boat point. Bucky can 
quickly transport you to various areas using his boats.

Puzzle No. 006 - Mailbox Panels - 30 Picarats
Opening the mailbox made all of the side panels fall off. The letters spelled 
the word POST.

Hint: The letters themselves do not make up the word POST; rather, the empty 
spaces leftover form the word POST. No pieces overlap.

Solution: Take the middle piece of the top row and place it in the lower left 
corner. Take the piece that was below it and place it directly above it to form 
the letter P. Take the bottom right piece and place it at the bottom of the 
mailbox (next to the P). Place the upper left piece above it to form an O. 
Place the lower left piece at the bottom (next to the blocks attached to the 
base of the O. Take the remaining piece on the left side and place it above the 
previous piece to form an S. Place the U shaped piece in the bottom right 
corner, and the last piece above it to form T. POST should now be visible.

Puzzle No. 007 - Mopping Up - 45 Picarats

A particular type of mop takes two days to dry, and breaks after being used 
three times. How many mops would be needed to mop once a day for 30 days?

Hint: Try making a calendar using the "Memo" function.

Solution: 10; the easiest way to figure this out is simple math. One broom can 
be used three times, therefore ten brooms could be used 30 times.

Use the mirrors to figure out which door is the exit.

Hint: Use the "Memo" function to trace the path of the laser as it bounces from 
mirror to mirror. The shape made by the tracing will form an arrow pointing to 
the door.

Solution: B is the correct answer; the light forms an arrow pointing to Door B.

Solve the Puzzle - Luke's Door

Luke will only let you into his room if you do a specific action. Listen 
carefully to his instructions, explore outside him room, and hit "Call Luke" 
when you are ready to perform the action.

Hint - Listen carefully to what Luke says; don't worry about what you find 
outside the door.

Solution: Tap the button and do nothing! Luke will only let you in if you do 
nothing.

Puzzle No. 009 - Certain Curtains - 20 Picarats

Beth can't read Doland's handwriting to figure out which curtain he is 
referring to. The note reads "don't forget curtain 13," but there are only four 
curtains, A, B, C, and D. Which curtain is he talking about?

Hint: What if the 1 and 3 were closer together?

Solution: Curtain B; the 13 is actually a messy B.

Leave the foyer and head back to the Wrecked House (follow the arrows on the 
top screen if you get lost). As you pass Bucky, he will give you a toy train, 
adding the "Toy Train" minigame to the Trunk. At first you will only have one 
track, but others will be added as you complete certain puzzles. There are ten 
tracks in all.

It was my first cooking class, so I was kind of nervous.

"Welcome! A chef is light on words and heavy on the cookin' so let's get 
going!"

"What's the first thing you need? That's right, ingredients."

"Today we're looking at carrots, onions, potatoes, broccoli, beef, and milk. 
Let's make us a stew!"

"OK, these are fresh veggies here, so you can't use them as is. Not unless you 
like the taste of dirt."

The chef was right. They were all pretty dirty, so I (RINSED) them first.

"Only a barbarian would cook with dirty vegetables! Don't be afraid to wash 
them thoroughly!"

"Once the vegetables are clean, put them on your cutting board."

"Now let's go ahead and peel them."

I was shaking nervously. I could hear the clock ticking, but I (GRIPPED) the 
peeler firmly.

The vegetables were peeled. I had done it. I exhaled a sigh of relief.

"Nice. Now that you've peeled them, let's cut 'em up!"

"Come on! Chop-chop! We'll do the same for the meat as well."

I took hold of the knife and, being careful not to cut myself, I (SLICED) all 
the vegetables.

"Good. Almost time to throw everything in the pot, but first..."

"Let's bring out the flavor a little bit."

The chef took out a frying pan. As soon as I saw it, I knew what I had to do.

I coated the frying pan in oil, threw in the meat and vegetables, and (SAUTEED) 
it all.

A wonderful smell filled the kitchen. I tried hard not to drool. I guess I 
didn't try hard enough.

"Great! Now that you've prepared the ingredients, it's time to throw everything 
in the pot!"

I did as I was instructed, and I gingerly (TURNED UP) the heat on the stove.

It wasn't long before the chef moved on to the next task.

"Looks good! And now here's my secret ingredient for good stew!"

"Add in some milk. Careful not to burn your stew!"

I turned the heat down a little, and I carefully (POURED IN) the correct amount 
of milk - no more, no less.

The contents of the pot bubbled consistently. Satisfied, I smiled as steam 
slowly filled the kitchen.

"Almost done! Now comes the hard part: we wait."

I fidgeted nervously. For the more I waited, the higher the likelihood that I 
would see burned stew.


Carefully, I stirred. I stirred firmly and with purpose as I (SIMMERED) the 
stew.

"Now for the finishing touches! Season the stew with a bit of salt, a bit of 
pepper... Voila!"

"You got yourself a stew! Does that smell better than Mom's stew? I think it 
does. Let's serve it up!"

I slowly brought the spoon to my lips and tentatively (TASTED) my first attempt 
at stew.

"Well? How is it? Spit it out!... You opinion, that is, not the stew."

"This is just the start to tasting the joy of preparing and cooking your own 
meal!"

"Until next time! Good cookin'!"

Now I'm a world-renowned chef. And to think... it all started with that one 
beef stew.

I can still taste it. It tastes like... success.

"Good morning, boss!"

"Too much talking, not enough mopping! I'll be back - I gotta go see a dog 
about a man!"

"Leave it to me! It will be so clean it will look like I licked it myself!"

I (SCRUBBED) the floor with my trusty old mop. 

The boss returned with a large box.

"We got our new shipment in! These are gonna fly off the shelves! I can feel it 
in my bones!"

"Put these out someplace where everyone can see them!" he barked.

"You got it, boss!"

Honestly, I thought the boss was wrong. Nobody wanted these, but I (ARRANGED) 
them as he asked.

Is there anything I can do to help these sell?

I took some paper and a pen and made a huge sign that would grab the customers' 
attention.

It read: "Don't miss out on this purrr-fect product!"

That was probably the best sign created by a cat. I proudly (HUNG) it over the 
new products.

"I don't hear any mopping going on here - Oh, wow! Hot diggity! That sign looks 
great!"

"Great work! Now take all of this stuff into the back room."

Before I could ask for a break, the boss was off chasing his own tail again.

I (MOVED) our surplus inventory into the storeroom.

"What are all these empty boxes doing here? Who was jumping in and out of all 
of these?!"

I had caught the boss playing in the empty boxes, but I had to act like I 
didn't know that.

"Oh, sorry, boss. I must've messed them all up earlier. I'll clean everything - 
don't worry."

I (FLATTENED) each box so I could fit them in the recycling bin.

"MMMMRRRRROOOWWWWW!"

I pulled a staple that was stuck in one of the boxes out of my finger.

It was little more than a cat scratch, but it still smarted. I (LICKED) the cut 
clean.

I thought we had a first-aid kit around here somewhere...

I applied some antiseptic to the cut.

"Me-OUCH!" Whoo! That stung!

Once the pain died down, I (WRAPPED) my finger with a bandage.

"Oh no! Are you all right?"

"Oh, it's just a scratch. I still have all nine lives left."

"Whew, that's a relief! I want to make sure my employees are safe and healthy!"

"Now go open the store. It's already two minutes past."

So I (PLACED) the signboard on the pavement outside the shop.

By the end of the day... the new goods were sold out!

We watched them fly off the shelves all day!

From that day onward, customers flocked to our shop in packs and we became the 
talk of the town.

It put the boss in such a good mood that he even swept the store... once.

I set out with my brushes and paints every day and look for the perfect 
landscape.

"Hmm. I think I'll stop here today and paint the river."

With my mind made up, I (SAT DOWN) on my chair and set everything up.

Then, out of nowhere, a young lad appeared. He stared at me with open curiosity 
before piping up.

"Are you painting a picture, sir? Can I watch?"

"If you must," I replied gruffly.

I felt a little nervous suddenly, as I sat in front of the blank canvas and 
(ROLLED UP) my sleeves.

Before I touched the brushes, I got out my bread. I always have a snack ready 
when I'm painting.

I need something close at hand for when my tummy growls so I can eat and paint 
at the same time.

"Hey, kid. Would you like a snack?"

The lad was eyeing my bread, so I figured I would give him some.

I cut twice as many slices as usual and (COVERED) them with plenty of butter.

"Aren't you having any?" he asked between mouthfuls.

"I will later," I told him.

As the boy munched, I took out my pencils, palette, and paints.

I started with a sketch. I took the pencil I'd just sharpened and (RUBBED) it 
on the canvas.

As I rubbed it across the canvas, the scenery gradually took shape.

The lad sat watching my hands and the movement of the pencil as he chewed on 
the bread.

"Ahh..." he sighed contentedly.

He gasped as he watched the trees and boats take shape. I guess I impressed 
him!

Then I started on the color. I put some paint down and (MIXED) it to get the 
right tint.

As I mixed, a beautiful blue appeared on the palette before our very eyes.

While I prepared my other base colors, I asked him a question.

"So do you like painting?"

"Of course!" he replied.

Inspiration flowed through me, and I set to work in earnest.

My brush drifted gracefully over the canvas and created soft, fluid shapes.

I (WIELDED) my brush powerfully and with great panache to make strong, bold 
lines.

My stomach growled loudly, and I saw the lad jump.

Pausing for breath, I reached for a piece of bread.

"Here you go, mister," he said. "I bet you thought I had finished it, huh?"

I gratefully took a big hunk of bread from him.

"It's not bad is it? Heh heh."

With that, I (MUNCHED) my snack with gusto.

With my tummy now happy, I returned to my painting and examined my work.

"Wow! What a beautiful picture!" said the lad.

"Not quite yet. It still needs some finishing touches," I said.

"Finishing touches?" he asked, puzzled.

Stroke by stroke, delicately and diligently, I (BREATHED) life into the 
painting.

When I finished, the picture turned out to be one of the best I had ever 
painted in my life!

I would even go so far as to say it was my masterpiece!

I gave the painting to the young lad who had inspired and helped me create my 
best work!

"He gave me that beautiful painting that I saw him create!"

"I'm going to grow up to be a painter! I want to create paintings like that!"

"My dream is to be an artist, just like him!"

Slide the blocks to put the brooch back together.

Hint: Get the two L-shaped blocks together.

Solution: Move the green square on the right down to bottom right corner. Slide 
the L block on right side up. Slide red gem right. Bring left gold brooch down. 
Put the red gem inside it. Move them up. Move the green square on left side up. 
Move the right side of brooch up and left. Move the left brooch down, then move 
the left green square up. Move the left brooch with gem up and right. Move the 
right side of brooch right, move the L shaped block that was in it left and 
down, then move the right side of brooch left and up. Move the right side of 
the brooch down and left, then move the green square at top down and right. 
Move the right side of brooch up into the open area. Move the L block in bottom 
left up, then move the left side of brooch and gem up and left. Move the bottom 
right green block into the open area at the bottom, and move the other one down 
to bottom right corner. Slide the right side of brooch down and left. Move the

fourth line from the left. Draw another line from at the intersection from the 
ninth line from the top, sixth line from the right, to the intersection at the 
tenth line from the top, fourth line from the right.

Find your way through the flip maze in the dark.

Hint: Try using the memo function to make a rough sketch of a map.

Solution: Start by going to the rightmost hole from the start. Then go left. Go 
down from there. From there go to the only available hole. Go to the hole in 
the top left area. Go down and left. Go right and up, then right and down. Now 
go back into the hole you came from and continue left. Go to the hole at the 
bottom. Go to the star!

Guide Layton and Luke out of the cave. There are two parts to this puzzle.

Hint: I don't even know where to start. By far the hardest puzzle in the game.
