And now something completely different..
Sonic Chronicles is different to other Sonic games, because it is developed by RPG group Bioware, known for their small library of great games such as Mass Effect and KOTOR.
And Im happy to say that Sonic Chronicles is no exception.
Its a turn based RPG where you roam about on a map of iconic Sonic settings, getting around by using your parties abilities (Like Dash, Fly, Climb). Numerous enemies are placed on the map, when you collide with them, you battle.
During battle there are 5 options, Defend, a Normal Attack, Use Items, POW Moves and Flee, which goes into a short mini-game where you have to escape your enemies. While this is different and keeps even escaping alive, it quickly get annoying and boring. POW moves, or Special Abilities, are conducted in a Elite Beat Heroes fashion, using your stylus to active and compose your move successfully. This loses it appeal easily, but all the way through, it keeps it alive and youll have to pay attention to what your doing all the time, instead of just pressing buttons for 40 hours.
If youre a player of past Bioware titles, you would know that one of Biowares most famous traits is the Dialogue Options system, where you choose what you want your main character to say. Fortunately, that option is in this game, however, it doesnt really have an effect on the gameplay itself, its just a bit of fun and fanservice.
There nothing much to say about the graphics really. They are solid, smooth and ultimately look nice. The animations are detailed, even though theres a distinct lack of cut scenes. Defiantly the second nicest looking game on the DS, only beaten by Final Fantasy IV.
It obviously an improvement over Sonic games lately. Knuckles gets captured by a group whos trying to gain all the Chaos Emeralds. Without spoiling any more, it doesnt stay like that for long.
It is good and entertaining storyline, maybe not as good as say, Sonic Adventure 2. Although, if youre a Sonic fan, youll get very nostalgic at the past games references, like Perfect Chaos and Eggmans very old inventions.
If you like Bioware games, Im sure youll love this. However, the difficulty curve is unbalanced and if youre a deep RPG fan, youll probably get annoyed at the POW system. Still, no matter how critical I try to be, it is one of the best Sonic games ever after Sonic Adventure. Keep a open mind, and youll like this game.
Sorry this review is so short, I orginally made one but it got deleted.
