How do you master abilities?

  1. I see the ability points bar, and I'm guessing that when it fills up, you master the ability. But how do you make it fill up?

  1. Simply put, missions. Each mission (or "random" battle, if you run into those) will give you AP upon completion. When you accumulate enough AP to match the point value of an ability (250 for an Elementalist's Fire Whip, for instance), you master the ability.

  1. Most pieces of equipment allow you to learn Abilities. Each piece of equipment that lets you learn an ability will have a list of jobs that can learn it. And so, here is the flow of learning abilities:
The piece of equipment lets you learn a new ability. A small list of abilities available for each job says which jobs learn what abilities from that equipment, and the amount of AP needed to MASTER it.
The first step is to find a piece of equipment that teaches an ability to the job that your unit is. Now, as long as that unit has that ability equipped, he/she will be able to use it. However, taking away that piece of equipment means that the unit will no longer be able to use that ability.
The second step is to earn AP. AP stands for ability points, and ability points allow you to master abilities. AP is earned after every mission that you successfully complete; usually 30 unless you use the AP UP privilege during a battle to increase it. Remember that I said that each ability has an amount of AP needed to master it; keep beating missions until you earn enough AP to master the ability.
The final step is to check your equipment. Go to the Unit Info menu and check your units. If the piece of equipment has an ability that says MASTER, then you have mastered that ability! Mastered abilities mean that you do not need the equipment in order to use it. Now, equip something else and start the process all over again! Note that if you haven't mastered the ability yet, you can see a progress bar under the ability's name showing how far away you are from mastering the ability.
Now it's time for an example: You are a Soldier. Soldiers can use swords and greatswords. You equip a shortsword, but it says it does not teach anything. Instead, you equip the Broadsword, which teaches First Aid. You need 100 AP in order to master it. You beat 4 missions, which give you 120 AP in total. In the results screen, you see New Abilities Mastered! You go to your unit info, and you see your soldier jumping. You check his equipment, and next to First Aid it says **MASTER!!**. Now you can give him another sword. Now you give him the Buster Sword, which teaches Rend Speed, and start over again until he masters Rend Speed.

  2. First, you equip equipments which has the abilities you want. Then, take a look a the amount of "Ap" it's written there.

So, if for example you want to learn a skill that needs 300 Ap, you need to earn Ap by doing missions (for example) until you reach the certain amount of Ap.

  3. After you do Missions or random encounters, the "success" screen after the quest/mission/encounter (The one where you get the loot, money, and skills up) it says on the bottom "______ Ability Points received". That adds to all your characters, and on the character screen it will tell you how much you need to get master on the ability. The rest rdj522 said.
