Connection to Other Media
The Malphas enemy is named after a crow-like demon that serves as a Great Prince of Hell. It is listed in the Ars Goetia, which itself part of the Lesser Key of Solomon, an anonymous book on demonology published in the 17th century.
The Konami Man item is a cameo of the main character from Konami Wai Wai World.
The enemy boss Zephyr, is a reference to Dio Brando, a character from the anime Jojo's Bizzare Adventure. They share the ability to stop time, and both of them throw knives at their opponents. Also, the visual effect that appears when the said ability is in use is the same; the scenery's colors turns negative.

The enemy "Chronomage" was inspired by the White Rabbit from "Alice in Wonderland". His description reads "Rabbit that uses a clock to stop time. Strict in regards to tardiness."

The unlockable Julius Mode is an extensive homage to Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse. Julius Belmont, Yoko Belnades, and Genya Arikado all replaced Trevor Belmont, Sypha Belnades, and Alucard (who is actually the same character story-wise), with updated versions of the NES characters' abilities. There is no character to replace Grant DaNasty, though unused dialogue reveals Hammer could've possibly filled the role.
