Is there a big difference between 3rd party Dramcast VGA adapters and the official one?

  1. I've been trying to find an official VGA adapter but the only one I can find sells for $75 while various 3rd party adapters sell for a third that price. Is it worth the extra $ for the official VGA box or will a third party one work just as well???

  1. Certain 3rd party ones are of good quality. HAIS & Pelican are very good and resemble the official SEGA one. Blaze has a very good adapter. NYKO has two models, one resembling the Blaze and the other sort of resembling the SEGA one; both are fair (the plastic feels cheap, but the cables are durable).

  1. The official, Sega made, VGA adapter was only released in Japan, making them somewhat of a collector's item. As far as performance goes, there really is no difference between the official one and the third party made units. The Dreamcast natively outputs the VGA signal, all the adapters do is give you a standard VGA connector interface to work with.

  2. Sometimes. The official dreamcast and some 3rd party (HAIS for example) have the same features. Some really cheap 3rd party adapters eliminate features like being switch between VGA/Composition/S-video outputs. I have one adapter that ONLY has a VGA out.

  3. 3rd party VGA boxes are poorly made. The most common ones that you will encounter on eBay are made of cheap material, have cheap connectors, and a switch that breaks off easily when switching between TV and PC output.
