Shenmue II LE Bonus Materials FAQ v.1.0 By E. Watts (email@example.com) Created 9/8/01 This FAQ covers the parts of the Shenmue II Limited Edition that aren't accessible through the game interface itself. So, it doesn't cover Shenmue II, the Shenmue Collection, etc. Index: A. SHENMUE II GD-ROM OMAKE I. Disc 1 II. Disc 2 III. Disc 3 IV. Disc 4 B. VIRTUA FIGHTER: HISTORY/VF4 GD-ROM I. History II. The Making of VF4 C. VIRTUA FIGHTER 4 PASSPORT GD-ROM D. MISCELLANEOUS E. LEGAL, ETC A. SHENMUE II GD-ROM OMAKE Each of the four Shenmue II GD-ROMs contains an Omake folder in its non-GD-ROM area. You can access these folders by placing the discs in your CD-ROM drive, double clicking the disc that appears on your desktop, and finding the folder entitled "OMAKE" in the open window. Note the disc to open is the data disc, entitled something like "SHENMUE2_DISC1", and not the audio CD entitled something like "Audio CD 7". See D. MISCELLANEOUS for more information on the audio. Once you open the OMAKE folder, you can either double click the file entitled "INDEX.HTML" and navigate using an interface on a web browser, or you can open further folders within the Omake folder to directly access files. I suggest using a web browser unless you want to do something specific like watch a movie in a different size than default. The html pages you can access are largely apparently in Japanese, since text displays in the same way that the text of Japanese web pages appears on my computer (which doesn't have the Japanese language kit installed on it). It's not really a problem; there is some English visible, links have Roman character titles, and there just aren't all that many links so trial and error doesn't eat up much time. And now you've got this guide. Note that there is a nice GIF of simplified dragons and phoenix's used as web page backgrounds on the pages here that works well as a tiled background on a computer screen. I. Disc 1 This index page is entitled Shenmue Goodies 2. It contains four sub-pages, each with a bunch of images of people within the game. The brief character animations are like those you could win and then download from the first Shenmue onto your VMU. I recognize several characters from what I've played of the main game so far, like the biker girl Joy, some guy you work lifting crates with, and the little thieving jerk Wong. The animated GIFs of these in-game characters are occasionally amusing. II. Disc 2 This index page is called something in Japanese, but the indications from links are that it's called the "Character Page." It contains 9 sub-pages, containing concept or fan art of major characters. Ryo, Ling Sha Hua/Shenhua Rei, (Syu) (temple girl), Joy, (Kun)(pigtail girl), Wuying Ren (gang guy), Souryu/Lan Di, (Kis)(master Chen's son), and Wong. III. Disc 3 This index page is called something in Japanese, but the indications from links are that it's called the "Shenmue CG Illustration" page. It contains 10 sub-pages, each with a CG still from either the first or second Shenmue. Under the displayed JPEG is a link to a higher quality version of the JPEG suitable as a background photo for a computer which has been zipped. The images are: 1. Ryo and Nozomi on the bike from the first game. 2. Nozomi (I think) with a gift in a brightly lit garden. 3. The Great Chai from the first game. 4. (temple girl) 5. Ryo's father 6. Lan Di/Souryu 7. Ryo and Ling Sha Hua/Shenhua Rei 8. Ryo and Joy 9. Ryo and pigtail girl 10. A different picture of Ryo and pigtail girl IV. Disc 4 This index page is entitled "Special Movie." Strange, since there are two movies, both of the preview demo type. Perhaps one of them isn't considered special. Put the second movie first and run them together and you have the demo from the GD-ROM (number 12) that came with Dorimaga 6/22/01. The weakest of the Omakes, since its main content has been recently separately available. B. VIRTUA FIGHTER: HISTORY/VF4 GD-ROM This disc is divided into two sections; the first is a history of the VF series, the second is some info on VF4 (misnamed since there's really nothing about the making of VF4 contained within it). This disc is almost entirely in English; the only exceptions are some in-game text and speech within movies, and some "How To Play" materials for VF4. The case is clear and has no insert in front or back. The disc has no computer accessible omake. I. History There are four games represented here; Virtua Fighter, Virtua Fighter 2, Virtua Fighter 3 and Virtua Fighter Kids. Each has two areas; movies and music. The movies range from test animation to in-game fighting in VF3tb. If you let the game sit in movie mode with no movie playing and not touching the controls, after a time VFKids Pai in her red outfit appears, moves from left to right three times, then jumps before repeating the whole thing indefinitely. The music section runs images while the many songs play. It is similar to the Virtua Fighter CG Portrait series on Saturn, although it is not full screen, the images have no camera movement at all, the images do not appear to be from the CG Portrait series, and the music from the CG Portrait Series is not present (based on my checking the Lau Chan CG Portrait entry against this History GD-ROM; feel free to give me others from the series and I'll double check them too...) . Many images are often repeated for different songs. Note: odd capitalization is in the game, as are apparent errors like "Another Costumes" and "Inpudence". Virtua Fighter Movie: V.F. Ignite Your Heart Vanessa Lei-Fei OPENING LOOP A OPENING LOOP B Into the Game Information Mostly how to play sheets, and a message from Yu Suzuki. C. VIRTUA FIGHTER 4 PASSPORT GD-ROM Freakishly, this GD-ROM does not display properly on a normal TV using DC-X on a US DC. It displays just fine on a VGA monitor, however. This is opposite to Shenmue II, which has trouble on the VGA monitor but not the TV. The case is clear and has a back insert with lots of instructions in Japanese. The disc has no computer accessible omake. On start up, you have two options: VF.NET and something in Japanese. VFNET option: First option seems to cancel. Second option: Displays a random armor type items when dialing. I've seen a pink item and a bandanna while dialing, and I think the back of the bear from Fighting Vipers and Fighters Megamix, among other things. Apparently it does not authenticate. I think you need to buy a license... Then it disconnects. Japanese text below VFNET option: After choosing this option, the displayed text includes at top: "Buy VF.Net License" Hit A. Question mark screen: choose left Get a message box including dial in number and what looks like a cancel button If you don't press it, you get a happy tone once you dial in and connect and authenticate using the settings you've put in for web connections using normal US browser software. Then there's an exclamation point screen with OK button if you accept, or an error page if you don't. Now you can access the official VF4 website directly. It's mostly in Japanese, but there's some stats on the fighters. You can also access the AM2 site (www.sega-am2.co.jp) through which you can get to www.shenmue.com. No direct link to the Shenmue site, oddly enough. You can also get to anything you want since it now works like a normal browser (hit the left trigger and choose the button it opens to get an URL entry field). D. MISCELLANEOUS I. Warning audio Each Shenmue GD-ROM has a different voice actor reading the warning that this is a game disc. Presumably these are actors from the game, but they sound different through my computer speakers. Disc 1 has a somewhat energetic young female voice, Disc 2 has a young adult male voice, Disc 3 has a more mature adult male voice, Disc 4 has a more surly young female voice. The Two Virtua Fighter GD-ROMs have identical audio tracks, a young female voice which is not a voice from Shenmue II GD-ROM 1 or 4. II. Slip Cover These six discs in their three containers are all held together by a thin cardboard slipcase similar to the cover artwork on the game itself. It is dominantly a light yellow tan, has the same Ling Sha Hua/Shenhua Rei image looming large in the background that the main game cover has, and apparently the same Ryo and Wuying Ren images, except they are negative flipped while each retaining their relative positions. The slipcover also has Joy and the temple girl flanking Ryo and Wuying Ren. Collectively, the package is massive. E. LEGAL, ETC Copyright 2001 E. Watts.
